2014 NFL Draft: Johnny Manziel sets date for private workout
Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel reportedly will skip Texas A&M's March 5 pro day, instead throwing at his own on-campus workout March 27.
The next time most NFL talent evaluators are likely to see Johnny Manziel throw a football is March 27. That is the date of Manziel's personal on-campus workout in College Station, with the Houston Chronicle's John McClain reporting Manziel will skip the Aggies' March 5 team pro day.
Manziel has not announced whether he will throw at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis -- quarterback passing drills are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23 -- but he has been working in the San Diego area with noted quarterbacks guru George Whitfield Jr. along with Baylor's Bryce Petty and Rice quarterback Nate German. They are among 14 FBS starters expected to work with Whitfield in March, according to McClain.
Manziel has been working on his mechanics, and it is not uncommon for top quarterback prospects to schedule their own pro days, choosing the time for NFL teams to flock to their campuses to watch them throw to familiar receivers.
Manziel is the No. 3-rated quarterback and No. 7 prospect overall, according to current NFLDraftScout.com ratings. However, he remains one of this draft's most polarizing prospects with a high-profile off-field life to go along with a skill set that has scouts debating his NFL potential. NFLDraftScout.com analysts Rob Rang and Dane Brugler both have Manziel going No. 4 overall to the Cleveland Browns in their current mock drafts, although he is not among the top 10 on Rang's Big Board.
Manziel is in a tight race within the top 10 selections with fellow underclassmen quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville and Central Florida's Blake Bortles. Brugler has Bortles going No. 1 overall to Houston and Bridgewater No. 3 to Jacksonville, while Rang has Bortles going to the Jaguars and Bridgewater to Oakland with the fifth pick.
