2014 NFL Draft: South Carolina CB Victor Hampton arrested April 6
The potential mid-round selection was arrested 10 days ago in South Carolina after a fight with his sister. If that wasn't bad enough, he and former teammate Kelcy Quarles are also under investigation for an assault in New York City.
With ugly incidents off the field plaguing some of the NFL's most popular franchises in recent years, teams are dedicating more and more attention to character red-flags.
Now, South Carolina cornerback Victor Hampton could be the latest to find out this fact.
As was first reported from Amanda C. Coyne of GoGamecocks.com, Hampton was arrested for disorderly conduct following a dispute with his sister April 6.
Hampton, through his attorney, Lowell Bernstein, has since acknowledged the incident.
According to a written statement in possession of NFLDraftScout.com, Hampton and his sister were involved in a "minor disagreement" inside of their shared duplex home and were each arrested. According to the statement, the siblings are "extremely close" and "embarrassed" by the situation and "how it reflects on our family."
Hampton, a physical and athletic player who elected to give up his final year of eligibility to enter the draft early, was initially given a 3rd-4th round grade by NFLDraftScout.com.
This news, as well as an average performance during the Combine and at his Pro Day, however, could push his stock deep into the third day of the draft.
Some teams, in fact, have taken Hampton off their board, entirely.
Hampton was a highly sought prep who originally signed with Florida out of high school. After redshirting in 2010, Hampton emerged as a valuable part of the rotation in 2011 and started the past two seasons for the Gamecocks, collecting 85 tackles and four interceptions during that time.
While his talent is undeniable, Hampton's over-aggression on and off the field is disconcerting.
According to Coyne's report, Hampton was briefly suspended from the team in 2011. The article also notes that Hampton and former teammate Kelcy Quarles (also a potential mid-round draft pick) are currently under investigation by the New York Police Department for an alleged assault at a nightclub.
It is important to note that neither Hampton nor Quarles have been charged in the New York City incident. Details of the assault on Michael Hauer, a promoter for the Greenhouse club, however, are disturbing and could be enough to force teams to begin their own investigations.
