Clemson was the place to be on Thursday for NFL evaluators as all 32 teams were represented to watch 19 former Tigers work out. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan were among the notable names in attendance.
Potential top-10 pick Vic Beasley was the star attraction and although he stood on his NFL Combine numbers, he did perform positional drills at both defensive line and linebacker.
“I came out here with the right mind-set and wanted to show these teams that I can play in space and drop back as a linebacker,” Beasley said after his workout.
Beasley weighed in a 246 pounds on Thursday, the same weight from the NFL Combine. His other numbers from Indianapolis: 4.53 40-yard dash, 41-inch vertical, 10-feet-10 broad jump, 6.91 3-cone drill and 35 reps on the bench press. Beasley was impressive in space and looked athletic going through linebacker drills, according to those in attendance.
“That just shows you the kind of guy Vic is,” Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney said. “He looked pretty good and didn’t have any issues at all out there in linebacker drills with two very polished guys.”
The Chicago Bears (head coach John Fox and college scouting director Marty Barrett) and New York Jets (defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers) are both slated to pick in the top-10 and watched Beasley closely during Thursday's workout.
Linebacker Stephone Anthony and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett are hoping to join Beasley as top-100 draft choices in two months. Anthony stood on his NFL Combine results and joined Beasley during linebacker drills. Jarrett improved his numbers in the 40-yard dash (from 5.06 to 5.03) and bench press (30 to 33 reps).
“He is just a football player,” Swinney said about Jarrett. “You can measure the times, but you can’t measure their heart. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. In a humble way.”
