Ex-Seminole Greg Reid tears ACL, out for 2012
The recent Valdosta State transfer injured his knee during a non-contact drill in practice and will miss his senior season
It’s been a rough summer for Greg Reid. Only a few weeks after being dismissed by Florida State, the Valdosta State senior cornerback tore his ACL in the final preseason scrimmage, ending his 2012 season. The injury was confirmed Wednesday morning by head coach David Dean.
The former Seminole hurt his knee returning a punt in a non-contact drill last Friday, but the severity of the injury wasn’t immediately known. Prior to the injury, Reid was NFLDraftScout.com’s No. 27-rated cornerback for the 2013 NFL Draft.
A native of Valdosta, Ga., Reid joined the Valdosta State program on August 14, a few weeks after he was kicked off Florida State’s team for a violation of team rules. He has been arrested twice in the past year, including misdemeanor traffic violations and misdemeanor marijuana possession in July. By his own admission, Reid had made some “dumb mistakes” and accepted his dismissal as a fresh start. But the injury currently puts his NFL future in limbo.
Despite his smallish frame (listed at 5-8, 188), Reid is a tough, scrappy cornerback and also excelled as a punt returner. At the time of his dismissal from FSU, he needed just 313 punt return yards to match the school record held by Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Reid, who would likely receive a medical redshirt year by the NCAA if he applied, has yet to announce whether he will return to college football or start preparations for the NFL. However, rehabbing from an ACL injury is usually an 8-10 month process and it is unlikely that Reid would be available to work out prior to next April’s draft.
