A relative unknown entering the pre-draft process despite being a first-team All-SWAC player each of the past three seasons, Armstead enjoyed a strong week at the Shrine Game and then blew up the athletic testing at the combine by setting a combine record for offensive linemen with a 4.71-second 40-yard dash and posting a 34.5-inch vertical jump and a 112-inch broad jump. A high school state champion in the shot put (long was 62'3"), he also put up 31 reps at 225 pounds at the combine.
Armstead is the No. 5-rated offensive tackle and 50th-ranked prospect overall by NFLDraftScout.com. A team betting on Armstead's significant upside might gamble on him even earlier. A terrific athlete, Armstead signed with Arkansas-Pine Bluff because it was the only school that would allow him to compete in both football and track.
Armstead was one of 14 prospects at Monday's workouts, where the 40-yard dash was run on a high school field.
"It's been fun and a good experience to compete against guys from bigger schools," he said. "It is a great opportunity coming from a small school even though they question the level of competition, although there are a lot of great players in the SWAC."
Linebacker Brandon Thurmond ran 4.82 and 4.74 40-yard dashes and bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times, according to NFL.com.
