Seminoles lose two-time All-ACC DE Brandon Jenkins for the season
Florida State senior defensive end Brandon Jenkins limped off the field with crutches during the second quarter of the Seminoles' season-opener Saturday against Murray State. Jenkins, a two-time defending All-ACC player, suffered a lower left leg injury that CBS' Bruce Feldman reports will cause him to miss the rest of the 2012 season.
Two months ago Florida State was a chic pick to win the BCS Championship. Suspensions and injuries since are threatening to derail the Seminoles' 2012 season before it's even really begun.
The luster of their dominant 69-3 season opener against Murray State was quickly lost with news that star defensive end Brandon Jenkins had suffered a left leg injury. Bruce Feldman is reporting that Jenkins suffered the dreaded Lisfranc injury which is expected to require screws being placed into his foot and cause him to miss the entire year.
Jenkins, a two-time defending All-ACC player and NFLDraftScout.com's No. 44 rated prospect overall for 2013, suffered what was characterized as a "left foot contusion" in the second quarter of Saturday's game.
The 6-3, 260 pound Jenkins has racked up 21.5 sacks over the past two seasons for the Seminoles, earning First Team All-ACC honors after each of those efforts. Jenkins has an explosive burst off the snap but lacks great strength at the point of attack and is therefore graded by NFLDraftScout.com as the No. 4 outside linebacker prospect of the 2013 draft.
No team is so blessed with talent that losing a productive pass rusher like Jenkins is going to go unnoticed. The Seminoles, however, are seemingly as well prepared to handle the loss of Jenkins as any team in the country. FSU is athletic and deep up front and features another star at the opposite defensive end position in junior Bjoern Werner, a German native who was actually a more impressive all-around player for the Seminoles a season ago than the more hyped Jenkins. Werner certainly answered the bell against Murray State, recording five tackles for loss and four sacks in limited duty. Jenkins' replacement -- junior college transfer Tank Carradine -- posted nine tackles, including a sack Saturday.
Jenkins hasn't used a redshirt over his career. He could elect to take one and return to the Seminoles in 2013 or begin preparation immediately for his next team... in the NFL.
