Top secret: Colts identify top pick, GM not telling
Grigson compliments Luck, RG3, says he'll share 'April 26'
Colts general manager Ryan Grigson has a secret. He's willing to share it, but not before next Thursday, when Grigson and the Colts must announce the identity of the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Grigson, in his first year as a general manager, told reporters Wednesday the franchsie has diligently reviewed its options and knows the player they will draft with the top pick April 26.
"We've exhausted the process, pretty much made up our mind," Grigson said. "We're going to go from there."
While complimenting Stanford redshirt junior Andrew Luck and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III from Baylor, Grigson hardly tipped his hand. He did allow that the team has known "for a long time" who it will draft in the same spot in which Peyton Manning was drafted the last time the Colts had the first overall pick. Grigson, hired in January as a first-time general manager, hasn't had an easy first few months on the job.
He released Manning and popular Colts such as Dallas Clark and Joseph Addai while owner Jim Irsay stressed patience as the team rebuilds. Irsay said months ago that rebuilding would begin with a quarterback.
Most project Luck as the top pick and there are pundits who rate him the top prospect at the position since Manning came out of Tennessee. Griffin gained momentum with a highly productive junior season and beat out Luck for the Heisman. But concerns about him coming from a spread offense and being described as a running quarterback work in Luck's favor.
Scouts consider Luck cerebral but also very athletic with Combine testing numbers that put him in an elite class at the position.
Grigson, a former offensive lineman at Purdue who was raised in Indiana, said the Colts won't draft for need with any of their 10 picks. He believes this draft class is exceptional along the offensive line.
As far as shedding light on which quarterback the team will draft or any other specific players that stand out Grigson can't share that information. Not yet.
"April 26," he said.
