Video: Johnny Manziel, Tajh Boyd heading in opposite directions
NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Rob Rang joined Kevin Corke to identify five NFL prospects rising and five falling at the midway point of the season.
With two full months of the college football season finished, NFL prospects have had plenty of opportunity to create an impression on NFL scouts.
Some have boosted their grades through the process. Others haven't played up to their previous standards and are slipping down draft boards as a result.
Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is a perfect example of a prospect who has risen up draft boards as a result of his fantastic play in 2013. Through eight games, he's only thrown four fewer touchdowns than his historic Heisman campaign of a year ago and he's done so by completing longer passes at a more frequent rate. This is not only due to the development of his favorite target, Mike Evans (another rising prospect), but also because Manziel has improved his arm strength and decision-making. Whether he returns to College Station for another year (or two), Johnny Football's dominance of the SEC makes him an obvious first round candidate, especially as the NFL shifts towards dual-threat passers.
Of course, with some players rising, others are falling - even among other multidimensional quarterbacks.
Clemson's Tajh Boyd entered the year as my top-rated senior passer. Rather than build upon last year's impressive comeback victory over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, however, Boyd has too reverted back to a run first mentality while in the pocket. Rather than make his progressions to second and third targets, Boyd is dropping his eyes and looking for running lanes. This didn't work against Florida State's speed and scouts are growing increasingly worried that Boyd won't be able to transfer his talents to the NFL successfully either.
