CB Fletcher, a notable Combine snub, out-shines LB Kuechly at BC Pro Day

Scouts and coaches representing 27 NFL teams traveled to the Boston College Pro Day Wednesday to see a staggering 32 prospects show off their athleticism. Of the 32 players working out, only eight were from Boston College. The others came from Harvard, Holy Cross and Massachusetts.

The most highly regarded of the bunch -- All-American inside linebacker Luke Kuechly -- not surprisingly stood on his stellar Combine performance. Kuechly, the reigning Butkus,Rotary Lombardi, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, answered any concerns about his athleticism once he was clocked at 4.58 seconds in the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis.

Kuechly did, however, participate in positional drills as he's been focusing on man coverage techniques since returning to IMG in Florida to continue working out in preparation for his Pro Day and his NFL future.

As Kuechly told Jeff Howe of NESN.com following the workout, "I haven't done a whole lot of man coverage, so I can't tell people I'm off the charts with it," Kuechly said. "It's a lot of technique work. We worked on it a little bit down in Florida, just kind of different techniques, but I think it's a lot of technique work and something I've just got to pick up on the fly."

With Kuechly performing just linebacker drills, the onus was on other BC and local products to create the buzz from this workout. Former Boston College cornerback Donnie Fletcher proved up to the challenge.

Fletcher, who entered his senior season highly regarded by scouts but was shockingly not included among the 36 cornerbacks invited to the Combine, silenced doubters of his straight-line speed with times ranging from 4.38-4.44 in two attempts at the 40-yard dash. He was listed by Boston College at 6-1, 195 pounds and registered 35 tackles, five pass breakups and two interceptions in 2011 for the Eagles. He was also participated in the prestigious Senior Bowl, which made his absence from the Combine list all the more surprising.

As you can read in the profile I wrote for Fletcher, I'm higher on him than scouts seem to be. Don't be surprised if this former BC Eagle winds up competing to be one of the first players drafted who wasn't invited to the Combine. Fletcher is currently rated by NFLDraftScout.com as a possible sixth round pick.
