Report: Dysert injures hamstring; won't test at combine

By Rob Rang | The Sports Xchange/

With the news that West Virginia's Geno Smith and Southern Cal's Matt Barkley plan to participate fully in the 2013 scouting combine, scouts have been cautiously optimistic that every one of the 16 quarterbacks invited to Indianapolis would be able to compete.

According to Daniel Jeremiah of, Miami of Ohio's Zac Dysert won't be able to participate in the athletic testing after suffering a slight tear to his right hamstring on Feb. 11.

While Smith and Barkley are the only two quarterbacks that I list among my top 32 prospects, Dysert,'s No. 9 rated passer, is an intriguing talent with midround prospects.

The injury, which carries with it a three- to four-week recovery time, doesn't sound serious enough to significantly impact Dysert's draft stock.

It could, however, lead to some reshuffling among the "second tier" passers of the draft.

Fortunately for Dysert, scouts have seen him often. The four-year starter and three-time captain overtook Ben Roethlisberger as Miami of Ohio's career passing leader (12,016 yards) and played well when pitted against tough competition. The 6-3, 224 pound Dysert physically looked like he belonged last month at the Senior Bowl.

While his skill set is intriguing, Dysert was consistently inaccurate on out-breaking routes, however. While talented, he is certainly a developmental prospect.

The injury robs Dysert of the opportunity to show off whatever improvements that he has made in his accuracy while prepping for the combine at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Perhaps just as significant, Dysert won't be able to show off his underrated mobility, either.

The former prep linebacker and wide receiver (along with quarterback) rushed for 665 yards and 12 touchdowns during his collegiate career. In a quarterback class lacking many of the dual-threat talents to take advantage of the sudden interest that scouts now have in athletic quarterbacks, Dysert, along with Florida State's E.J. Manuel and Arizona's Matt Scott, ranks among the more intriguing athletes at the position.

Dysert is expected to be fully healed in time for Miami's pro day, March 21.
