2015 NFL DRAFT

2013 NFL Draft: Bucs ship WR Arrelious Benn to Eagles

By Rob Rang | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

The style of quarterback that Chip Kelly prefers has been a frequent topic of conversation since the former Oregon head coach took the reigns in Philadelphia.

Kelly's preference for athletic offensive linemen and a committee of running backs has also been a hot topic.

Not enough attention, however, has been placed on the type of receiver that Kelly seemed to prefer while with the Ducks, likely because the Eagles already boast two dynamic playmakers (when healthy) in Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

While certainly possessing the elusiveness and speed that Kelly's offense requires, Jackson (5-foot-10, 175) and Maclin (6-0, 198) don't possess the size that he frequently relied on in his outside pass catchers at the collegiate level.

As such, Kelly and general manager Howie Roseman traded for a pass catcher on Friday with some bulk, shipping a sixth-round pick in next month's draft and a conditional pick in 2014 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 6-2, 220-pound Arrelious Benn and a 2013 seventh-round pick.

While Kelly's offense is predicated on pace and athleticism, he has relied on bigger receivers for much of his career. The Ducks' top wide receiver last year was 5-foot-11, 205-pound Josh Huff with 6-4, 202-pound Daryle Hawkins coming in just seven catches behind. Two years ago, Oregon's leading wide receiver was 6-4, 220-pound Lavasier Tuinei.

Since being drafted out of Illinois with the No. 39 overall pick in 2009, Benn has largely been a disappointment in Tampa Bay. He enjoyed his best season in 2011, starting 14 games and catching a career high 30 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns. This past season, however, he fell out of favor with new Bucs coach Greg Schiano in large part due to his inability to remain healthy, an issue dating back to his time at Illinois.

Benn is a big-bodied receiver with surprising ability to make defenders miss after the catch. In Kelly's offense, he could prove a very effective fit, especially considering the playmakers surrounding him.

Best of all for the Eagles, Benn was added to the squad cheaply.
