2015 NFL DRAFT

Oregon State Pro Day: Jordan Poyer, Markus Wheaton look good

By Dane Brugler | NFLDraftScout.com Senior Analyst

With 25 NFL representatives in attendance, Oregon State's top two prospects -- cornerback Jordan Poyer and wide receiver Markus Wheaton -- decided to mostly stand on their numbers from the combine last month. However, they did look impressive during positional drills at the Beavers' Pro Day on Friday, and little-known cornerback Brian Watkins wowed everyone with his speed.

Not known as a burner, Poyer ran an official 4.54 40-yard dash at the combine and decided to stick with that time. He did elect to lift and perform a few other drills, improving his bench press number from 8 to 11 reps. Poyer also participated in the vertical jump (28.5-inches) and broad jump (9-foot-7), but neither matched his marks from the combine (30.5-inches vertical, 9-foot-10 broad jump).

Wheaton decided to rest on all his numbers from the combine. At Lucas Oil Stadium last month, he recorded top times in the 40-yard dash (4.45), vertical jump (37-inches), short shuttle (4.02), long shuttle (11.16) and bench press (20 reps).

Both Poyer and Wheaton looked good during their positional drills with one scout saying “neither did much to help or hurt themselves today.”

However, the name that shocked a few scouts in attendance was Watkins, a former walk-on who played in 12 games last season as a reserve defensive back and special teams ace. He ran his 40-yard dash in the “high 4.2, low 4.3” range and looked “great” in his other drills. Despite an uninspiring resume (seven career tackles), Watkins showed off the athleticism necessary for the next level, which could earn him an undrafted free-agent contract after draft weekend.

Other notes from Oregon State's Pro Day:
- Offensive lineman Collin Kelly recorded 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, adding a 29.5-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-3 broad jump and 5.38 40-yard dash. A two-year starter at right tackle, he could be a late-round draft choice, but more likely an undrafted free agent.

- Other former Beavers who also worked out for scouts included defensive linemen Andrew Seumalo, Castro Masaniai and Rusty Fernando, linebacker Feti Unga, tight end Colby Prince and defensive backs Anthony Watkins and Keynan Parker.
