Surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus kept versatile Utah defender Trevor Reilly from fully participating at the 2014 Scouting Combine but he proved that he is well on his way towards a full recovery during Wednesday's Pro Day, clocking in at 4.66 and 4.69 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
To put those times in perspective, the only linebacker of similar size tested at the Combine who ran faster than the 6-foot-4, 244-pound Reilly was superstar Khalil Mack (6-foot-3, 251), who clocked in just one-hundredth of a second faster.
Reilly also posted a solid 34" vertical and 9-9" broad jump, according to Utah's official athletic website.
Demonstrating that he's recovering from the injury could push Reilly into the second round. His length and athleticism will intrigue scouts operating for 4-3 and 3-4 defenses, alike. He is at his best in the two-point stance, demonstrating the burst to pressure the edge and the long-arms to keep blockers from controlling him. He locates the football quickly and is a passionate defender, showing good overall athleticism and straight-line speed for a man of his size.
While Reilly may have helped himself the most with his Pro Day efforts, tight end Jake Murphy caught the attention of scouts by enjoying a very impressive positional workout. Murphy elected to sit on his Combine numbers, but caught the ball cleanly and ran very good routes after measuring in at 6-foot-3, 253 pounds. His impressive bloodlines -- his father, Dale Murphy, was a seven-time MLB All-Star with the Atlanta Braves -- often get cited but Jake is a highly intriguing, if underrated prospect in his own right.
Defensive back Keith McGill enjoyed a solid workout, as well. The 6-foot-3, 213 pounder was clocked at 4.52-4.54 seconds on his two 40-yard dash attempts -- terrific times for a cornerback of his size. Given the copycat nature of the NFL, don't be surprised if a team drafts McGill in the hopes that he'll prove to be the next Richard Sherman.
According to the Utes' report, representatives from 20 NFL teams were on hand for the workout.
