  • Overview

The three-year starter emerged as one of college football's elite pass coverage defenders. In addition to registering seven interceptions during the course of his last 14 games, he also established a new school career record with 32 pass deflections, becoming just the fifth player in Mountain West Conference annals to break up more than 30 passes in a career.

Quin is not only a quality deep coverage defender, thanks to his quickness and leaping ability, but he is perhaps pound-for-pound one of the strongest defensive backs in the country. While his 40 3/4-inch vertical jump set a school position record, he also earned the team Beefmaster Award in 2008 for his performance in the weight room. He put up 360 pounds in the bench, 328 in the power clean, 500 in the squat and 305 in the incline press.

At North Pike High school, Quin lettered four times in both football and basketball, earning the Jaguar's team MVP Award in both sports as a senior. He totaled 2,552 rushing yards, 224 tackles and 13 interceptions during his prep career. He also received the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete Award.

Surprisingly, those impressive prep numbers did not draw the attention of major college recruiters, so Quinn enrolled at Southwest Mississippi Community College in 2004. He appeared in two games before suffering a right arm fracture that would sideline him the rest of the campaign. He returned to action in 2005, as the cornerback returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown, adding eight pass deflections and 40 tackles (29 solos).

Quin enrolled at New Mexico in January, 2006, in time to compete for a starting job during spring drills. He took over left cornerback duties, earning All-Mountain West Conference honorable mention. He deflected 13 passes, fifth-highest on the school single-season record list, as he also totaled 63 tackles (37 solos) with two stops for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 13 contests.

A 2007 groin injury in August camp continued to get worse early in the season, as Quin was forced to undergo surgery after the second game. He was still named All-MWC honorable mention, as he started nine games. He produced 40 tackles (25 solos) with a pair of interceptions, as he also broke up eight other tosses.

Quin picked up All-MWC first-team recognition in 2008. Despite being bothered by a knee injury that required surgery after the season, he had 53 tackles (33 solos) that included 4.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. He batted down 11 balls and led the conference while ranking tied for 19th in the nation, intercepting five passes.

    Analysis

Positives: Adequate height and very solid overall build for a corner or free safety. … Has the strength to jam on the line. … Likes contact, will bring his hips and wrap up in the open field. … Good awareness, reads screens, play action and misdirection. … High-points the football and had good hands for the interception. … Breaks up passes by jumping routes or fighting for the ball in the air. … Returned 10 kickoffs for 323 yards as a senior and can be dangerous running back interceptions. … Played through pain and returned quickly from groin surgery during junior season. … Physical runner on returns -- goes straight upfield, is willing to take a hit and can bounce off to get additional yardage.

Negatives: Some teams will grade him as a safety and cornerback "tweener." … Does not have great straight-line or recovery speed. … Best when attacking the play in front of him. … Will throw his shoulder to make a hit instead of wrapping up. … Lacks great height and vertical leap to challenge tall NFL receivers. … Inconsistent getting off receiver blocks on the edge. … Lacks great quickness, vision or speed on returns.

Compares To: MELVIN BULLITT, Indianapolis -- With his downhill tackling ability, raw strength and ability to freelance and get to the ball, Quin might be a better fit as a safety. He has marginal hips when trying to cover the receiver deep, and despite his timed speed his acceleration tapers off when having to run long distances, making a move inside more logical.

    Scouting Report

    GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 6.20

Athletic Ability: Quin displays adequate height and very good quickness for his position. He can play a variety of roles in the secondary, but is best when allowed to perform in press coverage. He has the hand strength to reroute receivers at the line and will not hesitate to slip through trash to make plays in run force. He is a strong athlete who displays nice short-area quickness and agility. He maintains balance changing direction and displays quickness through transition. Durability is a concern, as he broke his right arm in 2004, had groin surgery during the 2007 campaign and ended the 2008 season on the operating table with a bad knee. GRADE: 6.3

Football Sense: He is generally alert on the field, but will struggle getting into position working the receiver in man coverage and can be fooled by play-action and misdirection. He needs a little time digesting plays and does not always anticipate the quarterback when working on deep routes. He will not blow coverage and can locate the ball, but can get a little reckless in his play. He also appears a bit stiff in his hips coming out of his breaks and might be better served playing safety, where he can keep the action in front of him. GRADE: 5.5

Character: Quin has been a great role model for the younger players, taking over the captain's role as a senior. He has no known off-field issues and was a member of the university's Student Athlete Advisory Committee. GRADE: 6.3

Competitiveness: When Quin steps on the field, he is all business. He plays with good enthusiasm and emotion. He shows toughness in run force and will compete until the whistle. He is a good playmaker that seems to be in the right place to make the play in front of him and has more than enough strength to make a shift to safety and play inside the box. GRADE: 6.4

Work Habits: Quin works hard in the weight room and has become a mentor for the younger players with his work habits. He takes well to hard coaching and is a self-starter who does more than is required when training. He is a respected and vocal leader who will not hesitate to explain to his teammates that they need to play at their peak level. The coaches say he is the first to enter and the last to leave the complex and has sat in on game planning with the staff. GRADE: 6.5

    ATHLETIC REPORT: GRADE: 6.16

Key and Diagnostic Skills: Vs. plays in front of him, Quin is quick to react, taking good angles to close on the ball. He is very effective in press coverage, but struggles some working in man coverage, as his hips are tight, evident when he takes false steps in transition. Also, he seems to lose angle concept when not playing inside the box and is slow to recover when a receiver gets behind him. He does a better job of anticipating the quarterback's moves when facing the backfield, but will struggle to locate the ball with his back turned. He makes quick decisions when working in the box, but sometimes jumps the play before it develops when operating in the deep zone. He reacts well to the ball in flight, showing adequate leaping ability. When working on deep routes, he will take some time digesting the play before reacting, relying more on his speed to recover. GRADE: 6.1

Man Coverage Ability: Quin can be very active and physical with his hands. He can generate a strong jolt to reroute receivers at the line, but despite his timed speed he does not have the recovery burst when a receiver gets behind him. Playing underneath, he knows how to stay on the hip of the receivers through their routes. He shows inconsistent plant and drive agility, as he will sometimes get sloppy on deep routes and round his angles to the ball. He is best when using his size to jam the opponent at the line. He can mirror in the short area, but needs to show quicker reactions when playing off the line. GRADE: 5.5

Zone Coverage Ability: Quin is best when playing off the line, as he does not always take good angles in deep pursuit. He needs to show better awareness looking up receivers and anticipating the quarterback to jump the play in man coverage. He has good leaping ability and does a fine job of timing his jumps to get to the ball at its highest point. He is a physical contact seeker stepping inside the box. He is a reliable tackler who hits with force and when kept in the short area, there are few passes caught in his area. GRADE: 6.4

Backpedal Skills: Quin is smooth in his stride when not in his pedal for long. He will struggle a bit coming out of his pedal, generating too much wasted motion. He has the speed to stay on the receiver's hip, but lacks a good recovery burst. He has a high, loose backpedal, but sometimes needs to stay in it longer. He shows stiffness flipping his hips and does not look fluid in his turns coming out of transition. GRADE: 5.5

Ball Reaction Skills: Quin has very good ability to break on the ball vs. plays in front of him. He just needs to do a better job of anticipating the quarterback when working the deep zone. He shows urgency closing on the ball in man coverage, but will hesitate some playing in the zone (when in the zone, for some reason he rounds some angles to the ball after planting). He has the leaping ability and natural hands to come up with the big interception and uses his reach to work around the receiver in attempts to cleanly break up the pass. GRADE: 6.8

Range/Recovery: Quin lacks a good recovery burst. He explodes off the snap and can stay stride for stride with the receivers working underneath, but does not have the loose hips needed to quickly change direction and close on the ball in deep patterns. He has very good acceleration when closing on plays in front of him, but his hips are too tight for him to handle receivers one-on-one in the NFL. GRADE: 5.6

Jumping Ability: Quin does a nice job of elevating for the ball. He is aggressive combating for the pass at its high point and uses his body well to position and ride up the receiver to get to the pass. He has the body control to make proper adjustments in attempts to get to the ball in flight. GRADE: 6.6

Hands: Quin is a natural hands catcher who secures the ball well before running with it. He does a nice job of catching the ball away from the body's frame. His sudden burst with the ball in his hands and experience on special teams could see him handle return duties at the next level. He is able to make the tough catch in traffic and will not hesitate to compete for the pigskin in a crowd. He uses his hands well to keep blockers away from his chest when trying to slip blocks working in trash. GRADE: 6.7

Run Defense: Quin is the type that puts full force behind his hits. His strength makes him more like that of a Cover-2 linebacker when working in the box. He has the speed and rip moves to slip off the blocker's shoulder and displays the closing burst to pursue when he penetrates the backfield. His power and hand usage let him take on and play off isolated blocks well. He is effective at taking angles to make plays along the perimeter and shows good aggression taking on combo blocks, making him effective in filling the alleys. When he hits the ball carrier, he will generally bring his opponent down with the initial tackle. GRADE: 6.0

Tackling Ability: Quin is a very effective tackler when he keeps plays in front of him. He stays low in his pads and will not hesitate to lower his head and drive with force to rock ball carriers back on their heels. He is a good "thud 'em up" type who will generally win the battle when he tries to wrestle his opponent down. He knows how to make adjustments to break down and fit when playing in the open and shows good desire to make the play. GRADE: 6.4
