04/08/2011 - Washington quarterback Jake Locker is one of the more polarizing players of the 2011 draft. As such, he has a busy travel schedule over the next few weeks as teams try to determine if they are willing to use a first round pick on the embattled Husky passer. If Locker's recent private workouts for the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks are any indication, his stock could be moving up at precisely the right time. According to representatives of both teams, Locker has performed very well, building off of the momentum he'd gained from a surprisingly impressive performance at the Combine and even better workout at his March 30 Pro Day. A source with the Vikings characterized Locker's workout as "very impressive" and claimed that the UW passer "might be in the mix" for the Vikings in the first round. Minnesota owns the No. 12 pick of the draft. Should Locker get past Minnesota, Miami and Jacksonville - two other teams some in the league feel may be considering him strongly - Locker's best bet to get drafted in the first round might be with his "hometown" Seahawks. Locker worked out for Seattle yesterday and a source from that franchise characterized his workout as "excellent" noting that Locker performed in a high manner in both the whiteboard and actual throwing session of the workout. The source also characterized Locker as a "great kid who has a huge upside because on the intangibles." - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com

  • Overview

Locker grew up in Ferndale, Wash. as a diehard football fan who watched the Huskies play on Saturdays with his father. So it was a lifelong dream come true when Washington gave him an opportunity to help resurrect its downtrodden program after Locker led Ferndale to a 14-0 record and the state 3A title in 2005.

He was a rare blue chip recruit for Tyrone Willingham, but that didn't stop the former Huskies coach from redshirting Locker. Finally on the field in 2007, the dual-threat was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after setting a conference record for quarterbacks by rushing for 987 yards and finished with 3,048 yards of total offense.

His sophomore season was cut short after just four games due to a broken thumb against Stanford, and Willingham was shown the door after an 0-12 season. That ushered in the Steve Sarkisian era, and marked a turning point in Locker's development.

After two years of relying on his legs and running for his life behind an atrocious offensive line, Locker relished the opportunity to learn a pro-style offense and be tutored by Sarkisian. The results were clear - and immediate.

Locker threw for 2,800 yards in 2009, the third-most in school history for a program that has seen Warren Moon, Mark Brunell, Damon and Brock Huard and several other NFL quarterbacks grace the field at Husky Stadium. Projected as a top 10 pick, Locker shocked most observers when he chose to return for his senior season.

Unfortunately for his draft stock, Locker's play regressed. The Heisman hopeful entering the season struggled with his accuracy (56.6 percent completions, and flopped miserably on the national stage in a blowout loss at home against Nebraska (4-for-20 passing). But he rallied the team to three consecutive victories to close the season, and the local hero led the Huskies to his first bowl game - and redemption in a Holiday Bowl win over the Huskers.

"It wasn't the easiest career for me at Washington," he said. "We had to go through a lot of adversity, and to be able to finish the way we did, and come out with a Holiday Bowl victory, third in the Pac-10 last year, things I'm very proud of and I think that our football team should be very proud of.

"It was very rewarding, to go through an 0-12 season and two years later to finish that way. Something I'll keep with me the rest of my life, and it's very fulfilling."

Opinions on Locker's NFL potential differ as wildly as some of his passes. He's a tantalizing athlete who turned down the promise of millions of dollars to return to school and will be an excellent locker room presence. But he has also never put it all together as a passer and is injury-prone due to his running style.

He has also spent much of the pre-draft process trying to convince teams he's not about to bolt for the Angels' organization, which owns his baseball rights and paid for his tuition the past two years.

NFL men love Locker's attitude and approach to the game, and he takes his critics head on.

"I think that that's part of this process," he said. "It's something you have to get comfortable with: playing under a microscope. Because it's going to be the same way with whatever team you end up with or whatever city you end up in. Expectations are going to be high, and you've got to find a way to keep yourself grounded and block that stuff out and have confidence in who you are and in the player you are."

That mindset is why many experts still consider Locker a safe bet to be selected in the top half of the first round.

"(Football) has been something that has always been a part of my life," Locker said. "I'm very passionate about it. It means a lot to me, and I'm going to put the work in it takes to be successful."

    Analysis

Accuracy: Showed significant improvement in 2009, though still a work in progress in this area. Has to do a better job of setting his feet before making the throw. Too often forces receivers on short and intermediate routes to slow or reach wide to collect his throws. Flashes surprising touch down the seam and in hitting the back on swing passes, though he needs to gain consistency here. Proved most accurate in critical situations, drilling a variety of pro-style throws (comebacks, crossing routes and deep-outs) when Washington faced some of its best competition or in situations with the game on the line.

Arm Strength: Possesses ideal arm strength. Drives the ball on short and intermediate routes. In fact, may need to learn to more consistently throw with touch for shorter routes, as he too often zips passes through his targets' hands. Can stretch the defense deep and throw 60-plus yards with a tight trajectory. Experienced playing in poor weather and has the arm strength to slice through strong winds. Reportedly has been clocked at 95 mph by baseball scouts.

Setup/Release: Well versed taking the snap from under center and out of the shotgun. Good foot speed, balance and agility for the quarterback position, but is still developing the nuances of setting his feet before releasing the pass. Has an efficient, over-the-top delivery and delivers the ball with velocity.

Reading Defenses: May have regressed as a senior in this area after improving significantly from his sophomore season (under Tyrone Willingham) to his junior season (first under Sarkisian). Has a tendency to stare down his primary option. Can be too aggressive and will throw the deep ball into double-coverage.

On the Move: A true dual-threat quarterback. Has 4.5 speed, but plays faster due to his vision, and his long strides in the open field are deceptive. Has some wiggle to make defenders miss and seems to enjoy the physical aspect of the game. Had to be reined back by Sarkisian (and previously, Willingham) for his willingness to drop his shoulder and take on the defender for additional yardage. Dangerous thrower on the move, demonstrating good velocity and improving accuracy when rolling to his right or left. Has a tendency to forget his mechanics when throwing on the move, however, leading to some of his passes drifting high or wide of his intended target.

Intangibles: In addition to his durability and consistency concerns, scouts also have to worry if Locker will remain in football. He's a dual sport athlete who has twice been drafted by MLB's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Signed a six-year deal with the Angels in 2009, though part of the agreement is that Locker will pursue a career in football over baseball. Technically considered a walk-on at UW as the Angels are paying for his scholarship costs. Highly respected by the coaching staff, teammates and fans. Gutty, determined. Named a team captain in 2009 and 2010. Honored with the Guy Flaherty Most Inspirational Award, the UW's oldest and most prestigious team honor, following the 2009 season.

Compares to: Donovan McNabb, Redskins -- He has an ideal combination of athleticism, arm strength and intangibles, and Locker, like McNabb, can make the highlight reel play despite being only a moderately accurate passer.
