04/28/2009 - COULD SURPRISE: West Virginia quarterback Pat White has suddenly emerged as competition for Chad Henne as the heir apparent to Chad Pennington. White, who of course, was picked to direct the trendy "Wildcat" offense, taking over for RB Ronnie Brown, but GM Jeff Ireland made it clear that he is in the running at quarterback. However, his 6-foot, slight frame suggests otherwise, but still he is the Big East's all-time leading rusher with 4,480 yards (and multipurpose yards) at quarterback, not to mention a leader who has garnered MVP honors in his last three bowl-led victories.

04/28/2009 - A closer look at the Dolphins' picks: Round 2/44 -- Pat White, QB/RB/WR, 6-0, 190, West Virginia...Despite comments to the contrary, the Dolphins cemented their commitment to enhancing the Wildcat formation with White taking over, or at least becoming a very strong second fiddle to RB Ronnie Brown's linchpin role.

      Overview

There have been many quarterbacks attempt to break into the NFL after great success in college spread offenses. Some have been blessed with impressive athletic ability but usually have ended up moving to another position.

Pat White understands his days as a quarterback could be over, but based on his work ethic and quickness, a shift to wide receiver or even tailback could see him find a quicker path to realizing his dream of playing in the National Football League.

White has drawn comparisons to Pittsburgh's Hines Ward and Redskins' WR Antwaan Randle-El. Both were college quarterbacks who went on to great success as receivers in the NFL. For every Ward and Randle-El story, there are reminders of failures of other spread quarterbacks, most notably former Nebraska quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch and West Virginia's Major Harris.

White is a fine athlete. Many pro baseball scouts felt that he could be

a standout pitcher or outfielder, if he went to a baseball diamond. Coming out of high school, where he was a pitcher/outfielder on two state championship baseball teams, he was a fourth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2004.

The nation's most versatile threat at quarterback, White closed out his career as the NCAA's all-time leader in rushing yardage by a quarterback, registering 4,480 yards. Before he concluded his Mountaineers career, he would go on to establish 19 school, Big East Conference and major college records. The first starting quarterback to win four bowl games, he also is the first player in league history to gain over 10,000 yards in total offense (10,529). He also set the Big East mark for touchdowns responsible for (103).

Named the team's Most Valuable Player in each of his final three seasons, White became the first three-time winner of the West Virginia Amateur Athlete of the Year Award. He was named MVP of the Senior Bowl in his home state of Alabama after guiding the South to a 35-18 victory over the North at Mobile.

At Daphne High School, White finished third in the "Mr. Football" voting by the Alabama Sports Writers Association as a senior. The first-team All-State Class 6-A quarterback rushed for 1,905 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior, he passed for 1,488 yards and 15 scores. Daphne won 14 straight games before losing the state final, 22-17.

White was named to the All-Super Southeast team and was a member of the Mobile Register's Elite 18 squad in addition to being named the 2003 Sideline and 1st-and-10 Player of the Year. He also pitched and played in the outfield for three seasons, leading the baseball team to a pair of state championships.

Four months after White signed with West Virginia in 2004, the Angels selected him in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft and offered a six-figure signing bonus. White decided to stick with football.

"My favorite moment as a player was when I realized I wanted to be a Mountaineer," he said. "The day of my visit, when I ran out on that field, it felt like nothing I've ever felt before."

White spent the 2004 season performing on the scout team. To help acclimate him to the system and more so because of his keen grasp of the playbook, he traveled with the team and was assigned to relaying signals to the WVU offense.

In 2005, White was a consensus Freshman All-American and Freshman All-Big East Conference first-team choice. He appeared in twelve games, starting five contests for an injured Adam Bednarik. He gained just 828 yards on 65-of-114 passing (57.0%), but ranked second on the squad in rushing, gaining 952 yards with seven scores on 131 carries (7.3-yard average). He proved to be a running threat with great elusiveness and was sacked just five times during his first season on the varsity.

As a sophomore, White was named the Big East Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He added All-ECAC first-team honors and was voted both Alabama and West Virginia Athlete of the Year. One of 18 semifinalists for Davey O'Brien Award, he completed 118-of-179 attempts (65.92%) for 1,655 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

He finished second on the team in rushing, producing 1,219 yards and 18 scores on 165 attempts (7.4-yard average). Despite all the running, White was sacked only 12 times, averaging 239.5 yards per game in total offense. A high ankle sprain vs. South Florida kept him out of the meeting vs. Rutgers. Along with tailback Steve Slaton (1,744), they became the 14th tandem in NCAA major college annals to give their team two 1,000-yard runners in the same season.

In 2007, the Big East Conference Offensive Player of the Year finished sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. He was named to ESPN's All-Bowl Team, in addition to being selected the MVP of the Fiesta Bowl. He led the team in rushing with 1,335 yards and fourteen touchdowns, the second-best rushing total of any major college quarterback during the season.

Along with Steve Slaton (1,051), they became the second tandem in NCAA annals to each rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. The semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and Davey O'Brien Award connected on 144-of-216 passes (66.67%) for 1,724 yards, 14 scores and only four interceptions. He also averaged 235.31 yards per game in total offense, despite missing good portions of the South Florida (right quad bruise) and Pittsburgh contests (right thumb dislocation) with injuries.

White was selected All-Big East Conference first-team as a senior. Lacking his partner in the backfield, tailback Steve Slaton (Houston Texans), the quarterback anchored a young offense, completing 180-of-274 passes (65.69%) for a career-high 1,842 yards, 21 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He finished second on the squad with 974 yards and eight scores on 191 rushing attempts (5.1-yard average), despite poor protection up front, as he was sacked a career-high 16 times.

The senior also averaged 234.67 yards per game in total offense in 12 contests. A helmet-to-helmet collision in the second quarter vs. Rutgers would knock him out of that contest and force him to sit out the next week vs. Syracuse.

"He is an electrifying athlete," North Carolina coach Butch Davis said of White. "The thing I think makes him equally as dangerous is that he can throw the football very, very well." Some Mountaineers fans have labeled him the greatest football player in school history. "Everybody's entitled to their opinion," White said. "And I'm grateful to those that think so."

      Scouting Report

      GENERAL REPORT

      GRADE: 6.62

Body Structure: White lacks the size and bulk you look for in a quarterback. But he has outstanding balance, quick feet and excellent acceleration. Lean frame with good upper-body muscle development (tapered), tight waist, long limbs (arms measure 32 3/4") and good-sized, soft hands to make a possible position switch. He has very good explosion in his burst that could see him possibly be a better prospect as a receiver, rather than a quarterback.

Athletic Ability: Too small and slight of frame to be a full-time NFL quarterback. He has excellent quickness, balance and change-of-direction agility. Had 4,480 yards rushing, but his lack of bulk makes him a better fit as a wide receiver than tailback. He is still a naturally gifted athlete whose outstanding quickness and work ethic are conducive to a position switch. Despite never having run routes, you can see the ease of movement in his running stride, explosive second gear and his ability to get to top speed in a hurry. He is a good playmaker with very good athletic ability, showing the skills to make the initial tackler miss. He might lack the arm strength to make all the throws you want from an NFL passer, but he is a great scrambler with the ability to avoid the rush. GRADE: 6.9 (QB) … 7.5 (WR)

Football Sense: Takes plays from the chalkboard to the playing field. He has the natural instincts and eyes to scan the field quickly. It's rare to see him make questionable decisions. He has good poise in the pocket and a keen sense for feeling pressure and knowing when to run. GRADE: 6.7 (QB) … 6.5 (WR)

Character: White is mature beyond his age. He is a student of the game, a good mentor for the younger players and displays the work ethic and blue-collar attitude to make a position switch. He gets great family support and has been a model citizen throughout his career. GRADE: 7.5 (QB/WR)

Competitiveness: Good competitor on the field, but perhaps as a further indication that he might not be able to withstand the rigors of being an NFL quarterback is his durability. While he will play with pain, his light frame might not hold up to an NFL pounding. He needs to dedicate more hours in the weight room, if he hopes to remain at quarterback, but I doubt if his frame can handle the additional weight without it affecting his greatest asset -- his pure speed. GRADE: 6.0 (QB/WR)

Work Habits: White is a hard worker, but will be challenged to pick up and grasp a playbook quickly, especially if he moves to another position. He works hard in practice, but needs to work in the training room, as his strength is below expectations even for a wide receiver. GRADE: 6.0 (QB/WR)

      QUARTERBACK ATHLETIC REPORT

      GRADE: 6.08

Setup: White operated in the spread offense and often out of the shotgun. While he has great quickness, he lacks experience under center and in a pro-style offense. His footwork looks sloppy on the drive back from center and he lacks the ideal height needed to scan the field. He needs to work on his plant-&-drive footwork and standing tall in the pocket, as he relies too much on his feet and tends to run at the first sign of pressure. He has a bit of a wind-up delivery and will drop the ball down to his hip. He shows quick feet to set up in his pass drops, but tends to throw off balance when he cannot set his base. He's very nimble, getting back quickly and standing tall, showing good downfield vision. He is a threat on rollouts due to his explosive burst and change-of-direction agility. GRADE: 5.4

Reading Defenses: Better reading defenses on the move than standing in the pocket (lack of height). He has a good feel for knowing when to run, bolting out of the pocket when protection breaks down. Will force throws when he can't find a rush lane outlet and tends to lock on to his primary target a bit, getting the ball out too late and forcing it into coverage. While he shows good agility on the rare times he is rolling out of the pocket, he tries to force the ball and does not look off his primary target. In order for him to be successful at the next level, he is going to have to do a better job of understanding underneath coverage to prevent so many of his passes from being deflected. GRADE: 6.0

Release: Has a slight hitch in his delivery. When he drops the ball down to his hip, he uses an elongated windmill motion, making his passes late coming off his fingers. He needs to do a better job of keeping his elbow up when standing tall in the pocket, but when throwing on the move, he demonstrates a smooth release. Shows good arm motion and follow-through firing the ball from the outside hash. When he takes the time to set his feet, he gets the ball through the throwing arc adequately, but he struggles with accuracy when throwing past the intermediate area. Will get his feet crossed at times and needs to plant his back foot in order to put more thrust behind his throws. GRADE: 5.2

Arm Strength: White is more of a "dink-and-dunk" type of passer, as he lacks the great zip to thread the needle. Can put the ball on a line on short throws over the middle. He needs a lot of work in setting his feet to improve his overall accuracy. Doesn't zip it on long throws and his deep ball has a tendency to flutter. His accuracy greatly suffers when his protection breaks down up front and he will use running as a first option. GRADE: 5.0

Accuracy: White has had good success completing short-area passes, but anything beyond 15 yards downfield could be a bit of an adventure. His accuracy suffers because he throws off of his back foot. He lacks good touch on underneath tosses and his stiff delivery makes him appear too mechanical. On short tosses, he throws an easy ball for backs to catch, but he has just marginal downfield accuracy. He does not have the strength to smoke the ball into the corner/safety void and struggles when trying to get zip on the ball on the move. Receivers are forced to work too hard on deep balls. GRADE: 5.5

Touch: If he doesn't set his feet, his passes will sail high and outside the framework of the receiver. He needs to do a better job of fitting the ball in tight areas. He lacks touch to lay the ball up and over the top when going long. When working underneath, he needs to vary his speed and know when to take something off his throws with better consistency. His biggest problem is his inability to consistently go through progressions and hitting his receivers coming out of their break. GRADE: 5.4

Poise: White is a good field general who knows how to escape pressure, but he does bolt out of the backfield more than he resets and throws. He needs to look to throw, as he does not stand in the pocket for long. Doesn't often get rattled. Even though he gets good yardage with his feet, he needs to address ball-security issues. He keeps the ball away from his frame and in his strong hand, leading to quite a few fumbles. Shows decent poise and pocket presence and an adequate feel for pressure, but he plays the game with a running back mentality, looking to tuck the ball and run with it as soon as the pocket collapses. GRADE: 6.3

Leadership: True team leader. Team had complete confidence in him and he is more of a leader by example, but will not hesitate to get vocal in the huddle. White might not be a take-charge type but will show his emotions when needed. He never points fingers when things go wrong on the field, showing more maturity than what you'd expect from a player his age. GRADE: 7.4

Pocket Movement: Keeps his head up and is very aware when to slide and make the play out of the pocket, but must address ball-security issues. He has the explosive quickness, good balance and feet to elude on the move and the acceleration to get big yardage heading into the second level. With his speed, he never has problems escaping and is rarely sacked. With those feet, he consistently buys a second chance when attempting to make something out of a disaster. Needs to improve his focus looking downfield, but showed in the past that he has the vision to spot his secondary targets. Few quarterbacks have the foot speed, balance and body control that White displays stepping up to avoid the pass rush. His scrambling ability makes him a threat to run with the ball on every play. GRADE: 7.3

Scrambling Ability: Has outstanding ability to escape pressure, but while he is more comfortable throwing on the move, he lacks great accuracy. He has good balance to make the short-area throws, but needs to show better hip flexibility to get the proper rotation needed when firing long. He is very elusive on the run and has the premium speed and instincts to make plays with his feet. Must do a better job of protecting the ball and keeping it closer to his body to reduce on all of his fumbles. GRADE: 7.3

      RECEIVER/HALFBACK ATHLETIC REPORT

      GRADE: 6.13

Release: White lacks ideal bulk and strength to beat the physical jam, he compensates with blazing speed. He has the feet, athletic agility and explosive burst to get off the line quickly. Due to his suddenness and second gear, he can easily gobble up the cushion and get behind the cornerback, but he needs to improve his upper-body strength and hand usage to be capable of defeating the jam and preventing defensive backs from rerouting him at the line. GRADE: 6.5

Acceleration: Has excellent short-area explosion. He can accelerate deep and knows how to sell his routes with effective head fakes and his fluid hips. He has a very good deep burst and shows the cutting ability to do a very nice job coming back for the ball in short areas. He has more than enough speed to run by the defender going for the deep ball. If he gets behind the cornerback, he has the short burst to elude. GRADE: 7.2

Quickness: White shows good stop-and-start quickness and is best when he pulls the ball down and runs with it. He has the quick feet to change direction immediately. His initial burst allows him to quickly eat up the cushion and he gains advantage over his defender from the start due to his foot speed. GRADE: 7.4

Route Running: White showed good body control to change direction and break down plays in practice sessions. He has the nimble feet to maintain body control throughout his patterns, but has no experience in this area. He has an explosive burst out of cuts and has that work ethic to get better. He shows the athletic ability to stick and define his cuts, as he possesses fluid acceleration in his stride. GRADE: 6.0

Separation Ability: White has the natural hip swerve, good balance, body control and elusiveness to make the initial tackler miss. He shows adequate leg drive to break some arm tackles and has enough quickness to break free in the open. His acceleration allows him to pull away and get open. He is also very alert, and appears to have the athletic skills to do a good job of varying his speed to get behind the defender. GRADE: 6.3

Ball Concentration: White is a tough competitor who stands tall and can absorb the hit. He has decent-sized hands to properly secure the ball and will not hesitate to go up for the pigskin in a crowd. He has the hips and athletic ability to make some catches while contorting his body. He just needs to learn where the sticks are and find the markers or stay in bounds, as he does have above average body control. GRADE: 6.3

Ball Adjustment: White is a natural athlete with good hip snap and balance. He looks natural running with the ball and has that second gear needed to get up field quickly. His body control and concentration skills will make him effective whether lining in the slot or out on the flank. He has a very good burst to catch up to the ball on deep routes and very good ability to track the ball while it is in flight. GRADE: 6.3

Leaping Ability: White is a good leaper with the body control and timing to reach the ball at its high point. He shows explosion and just needs to show that he can use it to go up for the jump ball. He will need reps to learn how to use his body to protect the ball and sell his routes. GRADE: 6.0

Hands: White has the natural, soft hands to make a smooth transition to wide receiver. He can reach and pluck away from the body's framework and appears to have the eyes and patience to settle in the soft areas to do a good job of looking the ball in. The only concern is if he has the ball security skills to not fumble like he did as a quarterback. GRADE: 5.6

Run After the Catch: White's burst and explosion presents difficulties for small defenders trying to bring him down. He is a fluid open-field runner with a great burst and has the quickness to gain big yardage in the second level. Still, he needs to get in the training room and add strength to his frame to prevent from being jammed or ping-ponged trying to go for the ball in a crowd. He's not what you would call a "dancer" on the field, but he has good shake. He won't juke the cornerback out of his socks, but will make them miss. His only deficiency is that he might not have the power to drive through arm tackles. GRADE: 5.2

Blocking Ability: In limited chances as a blocker, he showed a bit of reluctance to face up. He lacks technique and will short-arm and take passive swipes rather than attack to sustain. This is an area that he might be weakest in, if moved to receiver, but has the athletic ability and strength to be effective, if given patient coaching. GRADE: 4.6

Compares To: ANTWAAN RANDLE EL, Washington -- White is likely to make a position switch to wide receiver. He lacks the arm strength and size to stay at quarterback at the next level, unless he plays in the CFL. Even with his outstanding rushing totals, he has not been the most durable player and with his slight frame, will not be able to withstand NFL punishment as an every-down running back. A move to slot receiver or flanker appears to be his quickest route to success, but he will need time to learn the techniques of being a receiver.

      OVERALL GRADE: 6.17 (QB) … 6.21 (WR)

      --Report by Dave-Te' Thomas
