| Overview |
|
A dominant player at this level, Newton didn't allow a single sack in 2008 and was a consensus first-team All-OVC selection for the second consecutive year. Considering his athleticism and versatility, Newton appears well on his way toward joining the ranks of Matt Birk (Harvard), Hank Fraley (Robert Morris), Jamaal Jackson (Delaware State) and Dennis Norman (Princeton) as "small school" players having successfully made the transition to the NFL. Held his own against strong defensive linemen during East-West Shrine Game practices. |

Positives: Dominant player at this level. Athletic frame capable of adding at least another 10-15 pounds of mass without a significant loss of quickness. Good lateral quickness and balance for pass protection. Athletic enough to project to a guard in a zone-blocking scheme. Can get to the second level. Physical and tenacious when blocking at the second level. Good upper and lower body strength to drive defenders off the ball. Cognizant blocker who looks to help his teammates. Accurate deep snapper. Good bloodlines. His father, Cecil, Sr., played strong safety for two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and his younger brother, Cam, is Tim Tebow's backup at Florida. Negatives: Questionable level of competition. Good strength at this level, but may lack the power at this time to contribute early in a drive blocking system. Surrounded by potential NFL talent at running back (Javarris Williams) and a mobile quarterback. |
