08/05/2012 - For David Duran, last season began with talk of an even larger role in the Coastal Carolina offense, growing attention from NFL scouts and the promise of what could be a very fulfilling senior campaign for the all-conference tight end. It ended in late September after just four games, five catches and with the specter of a potentially career-ending shoulder surgery suddenly clouding his football future. "There was a period of time where I really just kind of contemplated, ???Why me? Why now? Why this?'?" he said, reflecting back. But those questions aren't necessary anymore. Duran is back in camp with the Chanticleers, now the elder statesman of the roster after being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The shoulder is sound. The preseason talk, this time from the new coaching staff, is again about finding more ways to get the sure-handed tight end involved in the offense. And the NFL scouts, well, they'll be back if Duran can prove he's still one of the top FCS players at his position. "There's not a lot of guys in the country that are 6-6, 245-250 [pounds] that can run and catch and do the things that he can do," CCU offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude said. And as he prepared to head out to the field Saturday for the Chants' third practice of fall camp, Duran reiterated that he's just thankful to still have the opportunity to do those things. Whatever the future holds, he'll worry about that when the time comes. "I'm just having fun just playing the game," he said. "I missed being out there, having to watch, not getting to do stuff. This is what I've been doing my whole life, so I'm just having a blast." - Ryan Young, The Sun News
