04/30/2012 - A closer look at the Panthers' picks: Round 7/216 -- D.J. Campbell, FS, 6-0, 201, California...A four-year special-teamer but one-year starter at Cal, he's going to have to make his way running down kicks to make the roster. - The Sports Xchange
Strengths: Nice blend of height and length with big hands. Good leaping ability with the playing speed and range to cover a large area. Plays decisive and aggressive, wasting little time in his movements. Violent hitter with willingness to throw his body around. Fearless and tough-minded with a special teams mentality. Made most of his opportunity to start as a senior.
Weaknesses: Plays a tad stiff and lacks the ankle flexibility to quickly change directions. Strength is average at-best and is an inconsistent tackler, hitting and hugging instead of wrapping and finishing. Plays too high and isn't a natural bender. Has a tough time getting off blocks and needs to do a better job avoiding blockers when attacking the line of scrimmage. Needs to do a better job diagnosing the play and sniffing out the action, flashing very raw instincts. Limited experience as a one-year starter (13 starts in 2011) and was more of a special teams ace as an underclassman.
