05/02/2011 - While running back Jacquizz Rodgers was making his leap to the NFL, the Oregon State Beavers were forging ahead without him. The Beavers held their annual spring scrimmage on Saturday before some 5,500 fans at Reser Stadium. Many of the team' top players from last season, including quarterback Ryan Katz, were unavailable because of injury. The Beavers finished 5-7 overall last year and were shut out of the postseason for the first time since 2005. The team was thwarted by a tough schedule and an injury to flanker James Rodgers, Jacquizz's older brother. Jacquizz Rodgers, or Quizz, as he is known, decided to skip his senior season and on Saturday went to the Atlanta Flacons in the fifth round of the NFL draft. The 5-foot-6, 198-pound running back averaged 1,282 yards rushing and scored 46 touchdowns in three seasons at Oregon State. His older brother won a medical hardship exemption to play for the Beavers this fall, and he has indicated he will be back. But first he must recover from a pair of surgeries on his left knee. James Rodgers watched from the sidelines for Saturday's situational scrimmage, as did tight end Joe Halahuni, who has a sore left shoulder. The Beavers were also without receiver Jordan Bishop and tight end Colby Prince because of injuries. Katz broke a bone in his throwing hand during the loss to Oregon in the Civil War last December. Backup quarterback Cody Vaz took over Saturday for the first-team offense, completing 19 of 32 passes for 234 yards. Jacquizz Rodgers' apparent replacement, Ryan McCants, ran for 57 yards on 16 carries. - AP Sports
