04/29/2012 - A closer look at the Redskins' picks: Round 3/71 -- Josh LeRibeus, OG, 6-2, 312, Southern Methodist...LeRibeus started every game at left guard as a redshirt sophomore and a senior but was academically ineligible as a junior while he was dropping 70 pounds. Seems like a reach pick. QUOTE TO NOTE: "I lost a toddler off the size of my belly." -- Third-round guard Josh LeRibeus on losing 70 pounds in 2010, the season he was academically ineligible at SMU. - The Sports Xchange
LeRibeus chose SMU over offers from Baylor, Boston College, Colorado State, Houston, San Diego State, Stanford and Utah as a three-star recruit out of Richardson, Texas.
After redshirting in 2007, he started two of 10 games the following year and was named honorable mention All-Conference USA as a sophomore. He sat out the 2010 season due to academic issues before returning in 2011 and again earning honorable mention all-conference accolades.
He has only average athleticism overall, but LeRibeus is a scrappy player whose real value is as a versatile interior lineman who can play multiple positions. He also earned back the trust of the coaching staff by dropping around 70 pounds and showing up in much better shape for his senior season.
Strengths: Understands body positioning and angles. Quick-footed with the ability to pull and cover a large area. Gritty attitude and competitive drive. Brute strength and raw power. Strong hands to take defenders where he wants. Stayed football-focused as a senior and had very good senior year. Nice job sinking his butt to anchor.
Weaknesses: Missed all of 2010 (academics). Weight needs to be monitored after dropping over 75 pounds prior to senior season. Stiff hips and body movements. Lacks burst off the snap and is more of a one-speed player. Doesn't show the lateral quickness to shuffle in a flash. Needs to be more aggressive at the point of attack.
