  • Overview
Smith doesn't have the ability of 2011 first-round pick Aldon Smith (Missouri, no relation) and gets the job done with effort and energy. A hard worker with size and bulk limitations in addition to small hands and short arms, Smith needs to be in a perfect scheme to pay dividends and will be considered by wide-aligned 4-3 defenses and as a 3-4 pass rusher.
    Analysis
Positives: Has the initial quickness to turn the corner but isn't an elite quick-twitch athlete. Consistently high motor and good long speed to close. Versatile enough to drop and could be viewed as a 3-4 linebacker. Stays with blocks and holds up relatively well for his size. Mature player who is committed and well-prepared. Negatives: Short for the defensive end position (6-2 1/2) and lacks the ideal length to compensate. A second slow to react to screen and misdirection. Missed time with a dislocated elbow in 2011. Fails to use his low center of gravity to his advantage to gain leverage. Can improve hand use.
