08/13/2009 - Texas redshirt freshman D.J. Grant, a converted wide receiver who was pushing for playing time at tight end, will miss the season after damaging ligaments in his left knee, the school announced this afternoon. Grant was hurt late in Wednesday's practice and the injury was revealed on an MRI. He had been moved from wide receiver to tight end before the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and practiced at the position in the spring before an ankle injury. Grant was expected to provide a pass-catching threat at a spot where the Longhorns already were thin. Converted offensive lineman Greg Smith entered preseason camp No. 1 on the tight end depth chart after losing about 30 pounds in the offseason. "We're disappointed for D.J.," coach Mack Brown said in a statement. "He's worked really hard and was ready to compete for playing time this season. We'll miss having him out on the field but we will be there to support him throughout his rehab. Fortunately we'll still have him around learning the position and helping the team at practices and meetings. He's a great kid and we know he'll get healthy, work hard in his rehabilitation and has a bright future." - Chuck Carlton, Dallas Morning News
