Player Overview

After starring at Naples High School in central Florida, Hyde spent the 2009 season at Fork Union Military Academy before enrolling at Ohio State in January 2010.

He played in seven games as a true freshman but didn't join the backfield rotation until 2011, when rushed for 566 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per carry while leading Buckeyes running backs with six touchdowns.

Hyde took over the primary backfield role in 2012, rushing for 970 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns in just 10 games - missing two due to an ankle injury.

With 1,527 yards as a senior despite missing the first three games due to suspension, Hyde became the first running back for an Urban Meyer-coached team to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

"I go out every game with the mindset that I have to make up for those three games," Hyde said in October. "That suspension ... really hurt."

He rushed for at least 100 yards in each of the last eight games, including two 200-yard performances. Hyde scored 15 touchdowns on the ground and added three more while catching 16 passes on the season.

Hyde was a workhorse with 208 carries in 2013 and used his breakout senior season to get the attention of NFL scouts. He entered the season with a late-round draft grade, but ran angrier than ever and continued to move up boards with several highly productive performances.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Well-built from head to toe and is at his best running with a head of steam, lowering his pads and pounding forward. Powerful North/South runner. Combination of power and drive, refusing to be stopped.

Some fluidity to his 240-pound frame to wiggle out of tackles, showing an excellent ability to absorb hits while continuing to pump his legs. Can turn on the jets when he needs to win the edge.

Reliable in terms of ball security and consistently ripping off chunks of positive yardage.

WEAKNESSES: He tends to have an identity crisis at times, not breaking as many tackles as expected. Got winded and fatigued in some games. Ground and pound style isn't an ideal fit for today's spread-out NFL game.

Will have to answer questions about three-game suspension in 2013 following alleged incident with a female at a nightclub over the summer. Did show significant remorse. Must avoid the weight problems that plagued him early in college.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the 49ers' picks: Round 2/57 -- Carlos Hyde, RB, 6-0, 230, Ohio State...Frank Gore will turn 31 this month. In his last performance, he rushed for 14 yards on 11 carries in the NFC Championship Game. Gore is still the starter, but Hyde is the future of the position alongside Marcus Lattimore, who is still a question mark after sitting all of last seasons while recovering from his gruesome knee injury. - The Sports Xchange
