Strengths Weaknesses

Highly-accurate and experienced kicker. Leg strength questions remain. While Budzien did have 21 touchbacks on 65 kickoffs last season, most reached around the goal line. Both field-goal misses came from 40-plus yards. However, he did reportedly make 6-of-9 attempts from 50-plus yards at his pro day - although not in the face of a kick rush or game pressure.

Player Overview

Budzien set school records for field goals in a season (23, 2013), career field goal percentage (.873), consecutive field goals made (17), career points scored (280) and most consecutive PATs made (136).

He led the country with 23 field goals made as a senior and was second nationally with a 92.0 conversion rate among kickers with at least 20 attempts to earn second team Walter Camp All-American honors. Budzien was also named first team All-Big Ten and the conference's kicker of the year.

He reportedly drew pre-draft interest from the Patriots Giants, Falcons, Colts and Buccaneers. Budzien has his degree from Northwestern, but said he is all in when it comes to pursuing an NFL career, even if that requires going the free agent route.

"I have to look at kickers at the end of a contract year who will be negotiating," Budzien told LivingLakeCounty.com before the draft. "Some teams are looking because their guys are at the end of the contract year and they don't think they can afford him or want to get cheaper at that position. That's certainly one way to cut costs, to get a new kicker. I'm looking at elements like who had a bad year last year. In the NFL, if you have one bad week, they'll be trying kickers out the next week. A lot of teams have a good kicker that struggled and will be looking at least in the free-agent market for a rookie."
