Mock Draft Expert Analysis

  • Kansas City Chiefs | #23
With three blockers lost to free agency -- including Pro Bowl tackle Branden Albert -- former offensive line coach Andy Reid's top priority may be addressing the front wall. Su'a-Filo is reliable in pass protection and has the athletic ability to get out and block at the second level, traits that make him an ideal fit in Andy Reid's screen-heavy offense.
  • Seattle Seahawks | #32
The Seahawks have issues at a few spots on the offensive line with issue at both tackle and guard, making Su'a-Filo a logical pick with his experience at both spots.
  • Miami Dolphins | #50
They have to get that line fixed, so why not two picks there in the first two rounds?

Strengths Weaknesses

Player Overview

As a veteran of 40 career starts, Su'a is the most pro-ready player on UCLA's talented offensive line. He is powerfully-built to handle bull rushes but has lateral agility and balance as a pass blocker. His mad work ethic was obvious early in life when he became an Eagle Scout and he has already completed his two-year Mormon missionary work.

Su'a-Filo lined up at left guard and left tackle this past season for the Bruins and played consistently well for the Bruins productive offense. He gets himself in trouble when he overextends himself, but he is an easy bender with a strong base to engage at the point of attack.

Strengths: Strong upper body with a well-proportioned frame. Nimble enough to get to the second level and looks natural pulling. Smooth body control and flexible hips to seal. Natural bend, balance and base with a strong anchor to generate power in the run game, can squat an elephant. Good anticipation and engages well at the point of attack.

Smart, savvy blocker with natural blocking instincts. Quick learner played left guard and left tackle. Durable and started every game in his three seasons at UCLA (40 starts; 20 at left tackle, 20 left guard).

WEAKNESSES: Inconsistent body positioning and takes poor angles. Caught lunging and struggles to recover. Not patient and lacks timing. Needs to develop a more deadly punch to jolt rushers at first contact and redirect their momentum. Lacks a mean streak and will take some plays off. Poor pad level leads to inconsistent leverage at the point. Needs to refine fundamentals. Older prospect for an underclassman (will be a 23-year-old rookie) after serving a two-year Mormon mission.

COMPARES TO: Danny Watkins, Miami Dolphins - Like Watkins, the game appears to come naturally to Su'a-Filo, who will also enter the NFL older than most prospects. Watkins has been a first round bust, but Su'a Filo has better NFL upside.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the Texans' picks: Round 2/33 - Xavier Su'a-Filo, G, 6-4, 307, UCLA...Completed a two-year mission and should start at left guard immediately. Says he tries to emulate Logan Mankins, the Patriots' Pro Bowl guard. He has the kind of nasty streak coaches love. Also played tackle but will focus on inside with Texans. - The Sports Xchange
