Player Overview

Thomas was a two-year starter at Georgia Tech, logging snaps between the rover safety and cornerback positions. He led the team in tackles as a senior and finished his career with 30 passes defended and nine interceptions.

Thomas isn't the biggest or fastest, but he plays fast, balanced and decisive with a tough-minded, high motor approach to the game. He can get lost in coverage at times with some tweener traits, but is a try-hard overachiever who gets the most out of his ability and has the on-field intensity, versatility and play speed to be a quality sub-package defensive back.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Aggressive athlete with the footwork and range to cover a lot of ground with enough speed to stick with receivers downfield. Puts himself in proper position with his natural awareness to read/react quickly ? nice job leveraging and cutting off routes. Light backpedal with good coordination in his drops.

Physical competitor and gets his nose dirty. Fierce hitter with strong hands. Works hard off blocks to be a factor in the run game with the strength to finish when around the football. Very good field sense and anticipation to show up quickly at the ballcarrier. Very tough blitzer, staying low and getting around blockers. Takes well to coaching with an active playing style. Leads by example and known as a hard worker off the field. Durable and tied the school record for career games played (54).

Quality resume as a two-year starter (29 career starts), seeing time at both safety and cornerback with experience as a return man and on offense.

WEAKNESSES: Short with average-at-best length and a tweener build. Long-speed is adequate, but lacks much burst or multiple gears in his drops. Appears tightly wound when changing direction, causing him to be a step late in man coverage ? not the most natural when asked to flip his hips. Will misdiagnose at times and needs to do a better job finding the ball.

Allows himself to get lost in a crowd when attacking the line of scrimmage. Inconsistent space player and needs to do a better job breaking down with proper technique. Feisty demeanor leads to premature contact down the field, attracting PI penalties.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the Patriots' picks: Round 6/206 - Jemea Thomas, CB, 5-9, 192, Georgia Tech...Thomas is an undersized tweener with experience at both safety and corner. He'll probably compete in the nickel in the NFL and on special teams, but as a four-year college starter brings solid experience to the next level. - The Sports Xchange
