Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Long arms and solid frame. Plays with toughness and burst to close. Attacks blockers, showing little regard for his own safety. Good body control and awareness of the sideline. Good, not great, burst to close. Impressive durability.

WEAKNESSES: Raw and still learning the game -- began playing as a high school senior. Has a high, choppy backpedal and loses a step in his transition. Easily turned by fast and shifty receiver. Stiff running downhill and lacks lateral explosiveness. Hops and sidesteps rather than fluidly changing direction.

Player Overview

While he can't match the smooth and sudden movement skills of the top-rated safeties in the 2014 class, Southward's school-record 54 games played at Wisconsin speak to his toughness when considering his physical, violent style of play on the field.

His lack of range and ball skills in coverage will certainly force him into late-round territory, but he can win a roster spot as a special teams contributor, with future prospects of rotating in on defense with his solid run play.
