Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Good-sized athlete and looks the part with a solid build and long arms. Natural burst, decisive strides and good straight-line speed. Fluid footwork and redirection skills to easily turn and stay hip-to-hip vertically. Strong plant foot to click-and-close in a flash with conviction.

Won't take unnecessary steps and mirrors well with proper body discipline. Patient, controlled feet. Physical in press with strong hands to initiate contact at the point of attack. Alert and rarely falls asleep at the wheel. Locates well and gets his hands on the ball - only 32.5% of passes thrown his way in 2013 were completed.

Good work ethic and a team-first guy with the right priorities, two-year team captain. Four-year starter (45 career starts) with experience in both man and zone coverage and holds the school record for career passes defended (42).

WEAKNESSES: High cut and will play too tall. Needs to continue and develop his instincts to better make plays on the ball. Will get caught with his back to the line of scrimmage and needs to show better route anticipation to jump passes.

Will get his eyes caught in the backfield and whiff when trying to jam at the line of scrimmage. Not as physical as he looks and is unreliable in run support, throwing his shoulder and often taking poor angles in pursuit. Needs to get stronger to better wrap and finish. Inconsistent ballskills and hand/eye coordination, failing to complete too many would-be interceptions. Wasn't asked to backpedal much in college.

Will get caught with his arms extended down the field and needs to protect against holding or interference penalties. Some durability concerns from his past, missing the end of 2009 (broken wrist) and most of 2011 (left foot). Suspended for the 2013 season opener due to a violation of team rules.

Player Overview

A two-star recruit, Gaines committed to Rice out of high school over Mississippi State, Kansas State and North Texas.

He became a starter as a true freshman in 2009 before a broken wrist ended his season. Gaines returned in 2010 as a sophomore and set a career-high in tackles (64), but he was again lost for the year in 2011 after a left foot injury ended his season, taking a medical redshirt. He stayed healthy the past two seasons, starting all 26 games and earning First Team All-CUSA honors both seasons.

Gaines has the size, length and aggressive nature to match-up well against receivers at the line of scrimmage to press, showing the footwork and redirection skills to flip-and-stick down the field, but he is inexperienced in his backpedal.

He isn't as physical as he looks and needs to refine his tackling technique, but he competes with the ball in the air and holds the Rice record for career passes defended (42) - just needs to come down with more interceptions. Gaines is patient and alert, but won't take many chances and needs to continue to develop his instincts to stay on the field at the next level.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the Chiefs' picks: Round 3/87 - Phillip Gaines, CB, 6-1, 185, Rice...A team in today's NFL can't have enough pass rushers or talented players in pass coverage. After getting their rusher in the first round, the Chiefs picked up a coverage guy in the third. He may be a reach given that in 52 games and 40 starts Gaines finished his college career with just four interceptions, all in his senior season. But he did set a school record for passes broken up (36) during a career with the Owls. - The Sports Xchange
