Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Good frame (6-3, 235) and good overall athlete who also played tight end in high school. Proven pass-rush ability with explosive burst off the snap. Ascending star in 2011 before knee injuries the following season, and showed he is again a threat off the edge in 2013. Obvious athleticism when healthy.

Rehabbed knee injuries vigorously, with former Gators defensive coordinator Dan Quinn saying in 2012: "What a strong attitude Ronald Powell has. I've been very, very impressed by him. I think I've told you that before, just in terms of his attitude and the leadership that he has shown. "It's certainly a step back for him, but I have no doubt in my mind - none - that he will be back and stronger than ever."

WEAKNESSES: Missed entire 2012 season after twice tearing his ACL, once during spring practice and then again during fall practice. Will require extensive medical checks.

Player Overview

Powell was a five-star recruit lured out of Moreno Valley, Calif. by then-head coach Urban Meyer as the No. 1-rated overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com. Powell was a two-way star as a pass rusher and tight end at Moreno Valley and chose Florida over Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Tennessee, UCLA and Southern Cal.

He played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2010, including one start at strong-side linebacker. Powell was selected to the Freshman All-SEC Team and finished with 25 tackles while also playing significantly on special teams.

Powell started 12 games the following season, missing the Auburn game due to an injury. He finished fourth on the team with 9.0 tackle for loss while recording a team-high 6.0 sacks.

Poised for a breakout 2012, Powell suffered a torn ACL during the April spring game. He reinjured the knee during fall practice and was forced to sit out the entire season while taking a medical redshirt.

Powell returned in 2013 to start eight of 11 games and led the Gators with four sacks and eight quarterback hurries. Rather than return for a fifth season, Powell announced on Jan. 6 that he would enter the 2014 NFL Draft.

"I want to thank the entire Gator Nation for making a kid from California a part of their family," Powell said in a statement. "It's hard to put into words what this whole experience has been for me. I've had so many opportunities and met so many people. All of them have been supportive and helpful in my time here. Because of that, I've had a chance to grow and mature into the man I am today and the man I am going to become in the future.

"This hasn't been an easy decision because this is a tough place to walk away from -- but really you never walk away from being a Gator. I never thought it would be this hard to make this decision -- most people think it's easy -- go for the money. It's hard to leave my brothers behind, but we've shared so much more than our time on the field. We've lived our lives together and we are truly a family. This place has so many memories that I will carry forever and I will never forget my coaches, teammates, trainers, strength staff, professors and the entire support staff that helped me during my time here.

"I wouldn't trade anything I've experienced because they have all helped me grow. I will miss running out of the tunnel into The Swamp and all of the tradition and great rivalries. It has been an honor to be a part of Gator history and I will always represent The Gator Nation and bleed Orange and Blue. Thanks again to everyone and much love for The Gator Nation. Once a Gator, Always a Gator! Go Gators!"
