Player Overview

A three-star LB recruit, Shembo narrowed his college choices to Notre Dame, North Carolina, Miami (FL) and Duke, choosing the Fighting Irish prior to his senior year in high school.

He earned valuable playing time as a true freshman reserve before becoming a starter as a sophomore. Shembo set career-bests in 2012 as a junior and similar stats as a senior, finishing his Notre Dame career with 19.5 sacks. He has a tweener skill-set, but also offers some versatility with experience in a 2- and 3-point stance at DE and OLB, finding ways to put pressure on the pocket.

Shembo, whose father moved to the U.S. from the Republic of Congo in 1986, lacks ideal explosion and is more of a one-speed type, but always gives top effort with active hands and limbs (just lacks elite power to do much with it). His personality, attitude and overall character will be heavily scrutinized due to the 2010 incident that resulted in a girl committing suicide, regardless if he was directly responsible. Shembo will be viewed at different positions by different schemes and his best fit might be as a 3-4 ILB - more of a later round option who showed little to separate himself from other pass rush prospects on tape.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: NFL body and length with solid bulk throughout...balanced athlete and stays low, gaining leverage off the edge...good short-area quickness to penetrate inside gaps and uses his natural speed on the outside, closing on his target in a hurry...adequate flexibility and bend...strong hands and delivers a punch at the POA, defeating blocks with raw power and quicks...explosive tackler and looks to strike through his target...alert, active and works hard to the pocket with consistent effort - plays like his hair is on fire...improved ball awareness and locating ability...durable and tough...versatile experience (34 career starts) playing both a hand-on-the-ground DE and stand up OLB, rushing from both sides of the LOS.

WEAKNESSES: One-speed edge rusher and needs to do a better job collecting himself on the move...tight hips and joints and not the most natural in space - alert, but will overpursue his target and needs a moment when breaking down or changing directions...needs to do a better job converting speed to power...needs to do a better job gaining outside leverage to hold contain...doesn't show much anticipation, especially pre-snap...undisciplined player and needs to eliminate the unnecessary penalties (facemasks, late hits, etc.)...production dipped as a senior with Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix not at full health...known as a hothead and needs to mature, on the field and off...character needs intensely investigated after he admitted he was the unnamed player investigated in the August 2010 case of a St. Mary's College student (Lizzy Seeberg) who alleged she was inappropriately touched in Shembo's dorm room and committed suicide two weeks later (he was never formally charged or arrested).
