Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Solidly built frame with good muscle packed onto his body. Balanced athlete with controlled footwork to elude defenders in space. Light on his feet to hurdle or sidestep defenders while bursting forward. Deceiving moves and cuts to make defenders miss, using patience and vision. Packs a punch at the point of attack, brushing off contact and using a stiff arm to pick up chunk yardage. Soft hands and reliable focus as a pass catcher with 70 career catches and 7 career receiving scores (only 6 rushing scores). Physically and mentally tough blocker with good vision to seek out his target and throw his body around. Above average versatility to be a threat blocking, rushing, receiving and on special teams ? helps save a roster spot. Runs with purpose and energy. Team-first attitude with a feisty competitive spirit. Strong football intangibles and team captain.

WEAKNESSES: Only average speed and acceleration, taking him longer than ideal to reach the edge. One speed runner and won?t surprise anyone with his burst or jets. Will run indecisive at times and try to go east-west. Willing blocker and initiates contact, but struggles to sustain or consistently square. Streaky blocking technique and needs to improve his hand use. Might lack a clear position for some schemes. Consistent, but very average career production with only 18 career starts ? never had double-digit starts in any season. Strong durability concerns after tearing multiple ligaments, including his ACL, in his left knee in Oct. 2013 (surgery in Nov. 2013), putting him on the shelf for an unknown time period.

Player Overview

A three-star linebacker/tight end recruit, Millard was recruited as a linebacker by many programs, but Oklahoma viewed him as an H-Back, choosing the Sooners over Iowa and Tennessee. He saw immediate action as a true freshman and produced consistent numbers as a part-time starter his four seasons, finishing his career with 538 rushing yards and 677 receiving yards ? earned First Team All-Big 12 honors the last two years. Millard is a Swiss army knife on the roster with the ability to impact the offense in a number of ways, also making plays on special teams coverage. He is quick-footed and agile with smooth hips and balance, but is limited in the speed department and can be caught from behind. Millard has good core strength with initial power as a ballcarrier and blocker. He is a gritty football player and open-minded to play wherever teams want, serving as a versatile threat whenever he?s on the field. Millard is the type who can be the unsung hero of a team and carve out a niche as a 10-year NFL pro, doing his best work as a pass-catcher. He does a lot of things well, enough to be drafted despite the knee injury and earn his keep on a roster.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the 49ers' picks: Round 7/245 -- Trey Millard, FB, 6-2, 247, Oklahoma...Another player coming off an ACL tear, Millard was regarded as the draft's top fullback had he not gotten injured. His health and his position combined had him fall drastically down the draft board. As one of the few teams in the NFL that still uses a fullback, Millard could be a player to pay attention to in future seasons. The 49ers' starting fullback Bruce Miller was a seventh-round in 2011. - The Sports Xchange
