Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Looks the part with a tall, long frame. Physical style with an aggressive demeanor to fill vs. the run. Won't back down at the contact point and welcomes contact. Good straight-line speed with the foot quickness to break quickly on the ball. Highly versatile with starting experience at cornerback and safety and extensive experience on special teams. Received praise from coaches for his natural feel on the field, route anticipation and work habits.

WEAKNESSES: Plays too upright and tight with some stiffness in his hips and change of direction skills. Transitional footwork needs work and will grip himself up in his backpedal. Narrow trunk with thin limbs. Struggles to stay coordinated in space and will leave production on the field. Has experience all over the secondary, but didn't excel or settle in at any one position.

Player Overview

Johnson was a two-sport star (basketball) out of New Jersey who arrived at N.C. State and played in 13 games at safety as a true freshman.

Primarily the nickel back in 2011, he started two of 13 games, posting 27 tackles and 3.0 sacks. He transitioned to cornerback the following season, finishing with 70 tackles and six tackles for loss while playing opposite David Amerson.

As a senior, Johnson started at cornerback before moving to free safety during the season. He finished with five starts at corner, seven at safety and tallied 82 tackles.

Johnson earned an invitation to the Scouting Combine, where he impressed with a 4.41-second 40-yard dash. He also posted a 38 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10'4" broad jump.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the 49ers' picks: Round 4/129 -- Dontae Johnson, CB, 6-2, 200, North Carolina State...Johnson is a project that lacks fundamentals but has great athletic upside. His size and speed combination (he ran a 4.45 in the 40) is one you find in earlier rounds, but he jumped between corner and safety without fully mastering one position. The 49ers and their coaching staff will have to coach him up, but he could be a starter down the road if he realizes his potential allowed by his physical gifts. - The Sports Xchange
