Player Overview

A four-star offensive tackle recruit out of high school, Thompson chose to play his college ball at Oklahoma over offers from Baylor, Houston and Texas Tech. After redshirting in 2010, he played sparingly in five games in 2011 as a redshirt freshman. Thompson worked his way into the starting line-up, starting five games and filling in for an injured Lane Johnson at left tackle. He started 11 games in 2013 at left tackle, missing the final two games of his junior year due to injuries. Thompson started all 13 games at left tackle in 2014, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors. He was invited to the 2015 Senior Bowl, but opted not to participate.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: A large-framed blocker with well-proportionated thickness and tree trunks for thighs...long arms and the wingspan to engulf rushers in pass protection and engage in the run game...has the core power to generate movement as a drive blocker...adequate initial quickness and balance for his size, moving well laterally...can get out in space and beat up defenders at the second level...flexible hips and knee bend to adjust on the fly and stay on his feet.

Improved patience, staying balanced through contact and not overextending...recognizes extra pressures to pick up stunts and blitzes, reacting well to win positioning...good starting experience with 29 career starts, including 26 at left tackle...motivated by his family - married (Olivia) with a son (three-year old, King) and daughter (one-year old, Aria - goddaughter of Oklahoma right tackle Daryl Williams).

WEAKNESSES: Labors in his kickslide and isn't a light mover...choppy footwork and lacks ideal coordination in space...struggles with leverage and caught stopping his feet at the point of attack...often a tick late and needs to improve his snap anticipation...too easily bullied on his heels and doesn't effectively extend and utilize his reach - late hands, allowing defenders to attack his chest...functional strength is inconsistent, not always playing with heavy hands and dominating when he should.

Tends to get grabby and will attract penalties...not a glass eater and doesn't play with a desired nasty streak...inconsistent motor and needs to eliminate mental mistakes - needs to shed the immaturity label and become more of a professional...medical evaluation needs checked after a ruptured Lisfranc tendon in his foot (Nov. 2013) that required two surgeries and ended his junior season - suffered another foot injury (Nov. 2014) that kept him from running at the NFL Scouting Combine.

IN OUR VIEW: Born in Germany while his father was stationed abroad as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, Thompson has impressive natural athleticism for his size, but the mental mistakes and undisciplined technique lead to mistakes and negative plays. Already married with two children, he considered leaving early for the NFL last season before a foot injury changed those plans, although it was for the best as Thompson showed improvement in several areas as a senior and started all 13 games at left tackle, staying healthy.

Some inconsistencies and questionable desire are still there, but his raw movement skills, size and length are made for the NFL, specifically a zone-blocking scheme - mid-to-late round pick who will likely be overdrafted.
