Player Overview

Just the 11th player in school history to be named to the all-conference team three times, Smith left Fresno State with 297 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 33 passes defensed -- 15 of which he intercepted.

After finishing tied for second in the country with seven interceptions as a junior, Smith wasn't nearly as productive as a senior. He recorded just one pick and the Bulldogs ranked 10th out of 12 in the Mountain West Conference in total defense and scoring defense.

He is a prolific takeaway machine and a generally reliable open-field tackler. His lack of size and consistent physicality could leave him waiting until Day Three to hear his name called in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Good awareness of receivers around him and keeps his eyes on the quarterback. Good quickness to break downhill on the ball. Terrific ball skills. Good hand-eye coordination to pluck the ball and has good body control to contort in the air to adjust. Explosive leaper who is surprisingly effective in jump-ball situations due to his athleticism and timing. Good vision and agility to pick up yardage after the interception or as a returner. Averaged 12.9 yards on seven punt returns as a senior and also has some experience returning kicks.

WEAKNESSES: Smaller than preferred and too often plays to his size. Struggles to disengage from blocks and though he can deliver a pop when he lowers his shoulder, Smith shows just average strength for the pull-down tackle. Can get fooled by savvy quarterbacks who can move him with their eyes and create larger passing windows. Takes questionable angles to the football.

05/05/2015 - A closer look at the Bengals' nine picks: Round 6/197 - Derron Smith, S, 5-10, 200, Fresno State...Smith intercepted 15 passes in his career, including 13 between the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and is one of just six players in Fresno State history credited with 300 or more tackles. Breaking into the secondary for playing time will be difficult, but the Bengals are looking to replenish their special teams after Taylor Mays signed with Minnesota as a free agent. - The Sports Xchange
