- NOV 12 SOCON SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sam Martin, Appalachian State, Sr., P/PK, Fayetteville, Ga.,...Sam Martin was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts and averaged 50.5 yards on four punts as Appalachian State topped Furman 33-28 to earn a share of the Southern Conference championship Saturday. Martin connected on field goals of 27, 47, 19 and 32 yards. His final two field goals accounted for the final six points of the game as the Mountaineers trailed 28-27 midway through the third quarter. With Appalachian State holding a five-point lead with just 1:57 to play, Martin booted a 62-yard punt that was downed at the Furman 1-yard line. Other Nominees: Jerodis Williams (Furman), J.J. Martin was a first-team All-American in 2012 after averaging 45.9 yards per attempt and 41.5 net. Twenty-three percent of his punts went for 50-plus yards.
Martin also has a background as a field-goal kicker, and 63.1 percent (45 of 71) of his career kickoffs went for touchbacks.
He was one of 30 prospects the Lions brought in for pre-draft visits.
Known for his booming leg, Martin was not among the record four punters invited to the combine this year. But he did average a 41.5-yard net in 2012, and 14 of his punts were 50-plus yards. Also has field goal experience and could potentially handle kickoff duties.
