Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Playmaker who finds a way to be around the ball. Experienced and productive with 226 career tackles, seven interceptions and five forced fumbles. Hard hitter who will sacrifice his body in run support. Strong special teams player; second-team All-MAC as a kick returner in 2011 and averaged more than 30 yards per return in 2013.

WEAKNESSES: Inconsistent tackler. Quarterbacks can use his aggressiveness against him, getting Gates to bite on play action. Good special teams player, but lacks elite straight-line speed to be consistent home run threat. Will need to prove he can handle the step up in competition from the MAC.

Player Overview

Gates, nicknamed "Boo Boo," is the first player in school history to score touchdowns via interception, fumble, kickoff and punt returns. For his efforts, Gates was named to the All-MAC first team.

He finished his career with 226 tackles, seven interceptions and five forced fumbles.

However, that production did not earn him an invitation to the scouting combine. At his pro day, Gates ran 40-yard dash times of 4.55 and 4.56 seconds while posting a 35-inch vertical and 27 reps on the 225-pound bench press.
