Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Built well for the position and has worked hard to max out his frame...adequate play speed with the closing quickness to drive on the football...very high FBI (football intelligence) with terrific recognition skills to read and react without hesitation - directs traffic pre-snap...physical at the point of attack with trench toughness and take-on skills to work through contact...anticipates well in zone coverage to undercut routes and make a play on the ball (25 passes defended and six career interceptions).

Versatile experience, playing the SAM, WILL and MIKE linebacker spots in college - productive resume with 328 career tackles...mature lifestyle with a wife (high school sweetheart, Amanda) in the Navy and son (Asaiah), who was born during his senior year in college...attractive football character and leadership traits, always coaching up his teammates with locked-in focus.

WEAKNESSES: Shorter than ideal with below average arm length and no growth potential...has some body stiffness and doesn't play with the suddenness to recover after false steps...overaggressive angles were an issue on tape, struggling to properly break down on the move...hits too high and needs to do a better job wrapping and lowering his strike zone to consistently finish...rocks for hands and leaves a lot of potential interceptions on the field.

Plays tough, but will bite off more than he can chew with average-at-best functional strength...has made some poor off-field decisions - was suspended for two weeks in spring 2014 after he was charged with a misdemeanor for selling two stolen parking passes...past durability issues, missing almost all of his senior year in high school with a torn ACL; missed one game and parts of others after a pinched nerve in his neck that forced him to leave the field on a stretcher (Sept. 2011).

IN OUR VIEW: A high school quarterback, Timu arrived at Washington as a 205-pound athlete and leaves as a 240-pound four-year starter at linebacker. The coaches threw a lot at him and he responded well and should continue to improve with more technique and discipline work. Timu has the make-up of a future football coach due to his above average smarts, instincts and leadership on the field. His limitations make it tough to project his role in the NFL, but he has the makings of a special teams stand-out who can provide depth on the linebacker depth chart - worth a late round gamble.

Player Overview

A three-star athlete out of high school, Timu had offers from Oregon, Washington and Hawaii and committed to the Huskies prior to his senior year in high school, but was forced to grayshirt in 2010 due to injury.

He earned a starting role as a freshman in 2011, recording 52 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. Timu moved inside to middle linebacker and started all 13 games in 2012, finishing with 91 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honors. He started 11 games in 2013 as a junior and posted 77 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honors.

Timu started all 14 games as senior in 2014 and led the team with 108 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble, earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honors for the third straight season. He earned an invitation to the 2015 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

07/07/2014 - Other Washington prospects worth watching: ILB John Timu, Senior...While Thompson gets most of the credit, Timu (pronounced Tee-Moo) and junior outside linebacker Travis Feeney will generate NFL consideration, as well. Timu has enough size, athleticism and physicality to have a shot at the NFL but likely will be moved back outside, as he takes too many false steps. Timu is a three-year starter and two-time team captain. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
