Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Stays light on his feet with good movement skills for a 300-pounder, showing smooth hips and fluid lateral range to work up and down the line of scrimmage. Flexible, bendy athlete for an interior lineman who is a tough guy to slow down when he wins off the snap.

Does a nice job using his hands and footwork to sidestep blockers and collapse gaps, and has active hands and the upper-body strength to bully blockers. Jernigan also shows improved ball awareness and can anchor against multiple blocks.

WEAKNESSES: Needs to improve his snap anticipation and is too often the last lineman to move off the ball. He's still developing his technique and figuring out how to properly use his limbs. He needs to improve his hand use to shed and combat blockers Appeared winded during national title game and must improve endurance.

Player Overview

Jernigan entered the 2013 season with just two career starts, but was widely regarded as one of the most talented players on the roster. The big question was how Jernigan would fare after pass-rushers Bjoern Werner, Cornelius Carradane and Brandon Jenkins all departed for the NFL.

The answer? Quite well.

Jernigan took over as a dominating force in the middle of one of the nation's top defenses, and earned first-team All-ACC accolades from the league's coaches.

Jernigan was a five-star defensive lineman prospect out of Lake City, Fla. who also scored four touchdowns as a senior. He chose Florida State over offers from LSU, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida, and went on to earn Freshman All-America honors from several media outlets while seeing action in all 13 games in 2011.

Jernigan started two of 13 games in 2012, finish fourth on the Seminoles with eight tackles for loss while recording 46 total tackles.

Jernigan has violent, active hands and does a good job with the usual moves (rip, swim), but has short arms (31 5/8) and must learn to disengage more quickly to avoid being detained by NFL linemen with, ah, good hands.

Relentless pest will be an immediate, in-your-face troublemaker for blockers and a sure contributor to the team fortunate enough to grab him in the first round. Must improve stamina. Player and agent declined comment on report Jernigan tested positive for a banned substance at the combine.
