Player Overview

In his first season as a starter on the strong side in 2014, Davis finished fourth on the team with 58 total tackles, displaying good straight-line speed and excellent point of attack toughness.

Davis suffered a season-ending knee injury on Aug. 11, 2015.

"We're so disappointed for Ed Davis, and his presence in the lineup will be missed," Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio said. "Ed is a tremendous playmaker and a solid leader."

The fifth-year senior may have an opportunity to petition for a medical redshirt in an attempt to gain an extra year of eligibility.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Davis is at his best downhill (12.0 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks in 2014), initiating contact and delivering a blow with terrific take-on strength. His game is attacking the line of scrimmage like a battering ram, taking on blocks and blowing up gaps to disrupt the offensive gameplan.

WEAKNESSES: Knee injury suffered on Aug. 11 will require surgery and extensive rehab. He has some stiffness in the open field and needs a moment to collect himself when changing directions.

08/13/2015 - Michigan State LB Davis injures knee, out for season...Michigan State lost linebacker Ed Davis for the season on the first day of practice in full pads. The fifth-year senior suffered a knee injury that an MRI confirmed will require surgery, the school announced Wednesday night. Davis, listed by NFLDraftScout.com as the No. 41 outside linebacker in the 2016 class, is a significant loss for the Michigan State defense. The strong-side linebacker ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 58 in his first year as a starter in 2014 and had 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Coach Mark Dantonio said Davis might be able to seek a medical redshirt and a sixth year of eligibility. Davis is the fifth player the Spartans have lost from last year's defense through injury, graduation or early entry into the NFL.

"We're so disappointed for Ed Davis, and his presence in the lineup will be missed," Dantonio said via Twitter. "Ed is a tremendous playmaker and a solid leader. "Our program has faced adversity before, so now it's time to adopt the 'next man up' mentality. Ed's season-ending injury provides others with an opportunity to have a positive impact on this team." Stepping up as his replacement could be sophomore Chris Frey, who is listed as No. 2 at the position in the preseason after appearing in 13 games last year and making 19 tackles. But it will be tough to replace Davis. "He may be as good a linebacker as we've had," Dantonio said of Davis during Big Ten Media Days last month. "This past year, I thought he had a great season and I think he's poised to have a great season. - The Sports Xchange
