Player Overview

Grice went the JUCO route out of high school, playing two seasons at Blinn Junior College (TX) and committed to play at Texas A&M, but switched and signed with Arizona State prior to the 2012 season.

He became the starter in his first season for the Sun Devils as a junior, but finished third on the team in rush attempts. Grice earned All-Pac 12 honors in 2013 as a senior, falling just short of the 1,000-yard rushing mark, but led the conference in scoring with 20 total touchdowns in just 11 games.

He is a balanced, agile athlete and a strong cutback runner with his sharp footwork and vision to make defenders look foolish. Grice has an upright, lean body style and his durability and finishing toughness leaves a lot to be desired. He lacks many distinguishable traits as a running back, but is a mismatch as a pass-catcher with the skills to develop into a capable blocker - potential third down back and late round option.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Flexible athlete with good plant foot burst and vision to make strong cuts...good patience and lateral burst to allow defenders to overpursue...nice job staying balanced, allowing him to shake off some contact in space - sturdy to let defenders slide off of him...good body control and coordination as a pass-catcher to quickly adjust and finish catches...reliable hands and talented after the catch, catching the ball in stride and getting north-south (91 combined catches at ASU)...speed to win the edge and accelerate down the field...nose for the end zone with 39 total touchdowns in two seasons for the Sun Devils (25 rushing/14 receiving), averaging 5.7 yards per carry in his career...willing blocker in pass pro and downfield...some special teams experience as a return man.

WEAKNESSES: Lean body type and offers little power as an inside runner, not the type of runner who will move the pile...runs too upright and needs to improve his pad level at the mesh point and first contact...runs hesitant through the LOS and is too patient...lacks ideal finishing toughness and is timid at the POA, looking to avoid contact at all costs...gets wild in his movements and needs to consistently stay under control in his cuts...needs blocking technique work to better help in pass protection, struggling to use proper hand use...durability concerns, missing time as a senior due to a leg injury.

05/12/2014 - A closer look at the Chargers' picks: Round 6/201 -- Marion Grice, RB, 6-0, 208, Arizona State...Not a back with elite speed, but one that is patient in waiting for his blocks and can hit the hole with quickness. Seems to be a good option on third downs as he has soft hands and is adequate in pass blocking. The end of his season last year was derailed by a leg injury, but according to the Chargers, he's good to go. - The Sports Xchange
