Player Overview

Every draft class has a notable reclamation project. Last year it was former Ohio State pass rusher Noah Spence, a first-round talent who fell to the early second round due to his baggage. For the 2017 group, Fields is in that category of a player with his share of background issues, but the talent on the field will be greatly enticing for NFL scouts.

Fields started his collegiate career at TCU and made an instant impact with 18.5 tackles for loss and 10.0 sacks in 2012 to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors. He was tabbed as the conference's preseason Defensive Player of the Year entering 2013, but Fields missed most of his sophomore season because of injuries and off-field issues. Then in the summer of 2014, he was accused of punching his ex-girlfriend and threatening her with a gun, leading to his suspension and eventual dismissal.

After a year at Trinity Valley Community College, Fields transferred to Louisville for the 2015 season, where he started to put his name back on the NFL radar, finishing his junior year with 63 tackles, 22.0 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Lining up in a three-point stance at both left and right defensive end, Fields has the edge speed and flexible body type to threaten the corner, creating holding penalties with his shoulder dip and sharp 90-degree turns. He uses his length and lean to keep blockers from his body while also flashing the secondary quickness once disengaged to find and pursue the ballcarrier. Fields also looks natural on his feet when asked to drop in space, which will make him an appealing prospect to both 4-3 and 3-4 teams.

WEAKNESSES: Fields still has room to get stronger and fill out his frame as his lack of point of attack strength will stand out on film, struggling to generate consistent movement or convert speed to power. He has the body flexibility to contort his way around bodies, but needs to keep his feet underneath him and stay off the ground. While his technique and ball awareness both have room for improvement, Fields can impress scouts as a senior by simply showing more energy and fire on every snap.

IN OUR VIEW: Like any prospect with his cloudy background, which includes off-field and passion question marks, Fields will have tough questions to answer during the pre-draft process. But for now, improved mechanics and overall effort will go a long way because Fields has the athletic talent and on-field production to be an early-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
