Mock Draft Expert Analysis

  • Dallas Cowboys | #28
By allowing multiple members of their secondary to walk in free agency, it seems like that the Cowboys will address that position early and potentially often in the draft. For whatever reason Awuzie has not generated as much national attention as some of his peers at cornerback but some scouts feel he is the safest of this year's class, standing out on tape due to his quickness, anticipation and toughness, including in run support.

  • Indianapolis Colts | #15
He has versatility to play corner or safety. The Colts could use help at both.

Player Overview

Awuzie started 12 of 13 games as a junior, earning All-Pac-12 second-team honors while playing in a team-high 897 snaps, finishing second on the Buffs with 90 tackles to go with a team-high 12 tackles for loss, becoming the first Colorado defensive back to lead the team in that statistic since it started being tracked in 1969. Awuzie also recorded 10 pass deflections and a pair of interceptions.

It was continued progression for Awuzie, who started the first nine games of 2014 before suffering a lacerated kidney in practice that ended his season with eight pass deflections. He also started seven of the 12 games he saw action in as a freshman, recording 59 tackles, including five tackles for loss and a sack. He also had four pass deflections.

The San Jose, Calif. native was a two-way star at Oak Grove high school, rushing for 1,285 yards and adding 487 yards on 18 receptions while also racking up 69 tackles with four interceptions and 12 pass deflections as a senior. Awuzie was also a three-time letterman in basketball and starred on track team.

Strengths Weaknesses

STRENGTHS: Lockdown corner and fluid athlete with terrific awareness for the position. Good closing speed and times his leaps well to break up receptions. Four-year starter with extensive experience coming out of the competitive Pac-12.
