01/08/2009 - Oregon State senior football players Al Afalava and Sammie Stroughter have accepted invitations to play in the 84th annual East-West Shrine Game Sat., Jan. 17 at Robertson Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. The game will be played at 1 p.m. PST and is being televised by ESPN2. The duo joins teammates Victor Strong-Butler and Brandon Hughes on the West team, which will be coached by former NCAA and NFL head coach Gene Stallings. The four Beavers in the game are the most since Craig Hanneman, Dave Schilling, Jim Sherbert and Jack Turnbull played in the 1971 event (1970 season). Stroughter concluded his career as one of the best receivers ever in Beaver history. He leaves the school as OSU's third all-time leader for receptions with 164 and yards with 2,623. Overview

For his first two years in Corvallis, Stroughter was primarily a return specialist. That all changed in 2006, as he accumulated 1,293 yards on 74 receptions - and still managed to score three touchdowns on punt returns.

Unfortunately, he could not follow up that second-team All-Pac-10 performance in 2007 due to his battle with depression and a lacerated kidney. He came back from that redshirt season with a vengeance as a senior, earning first-team all-conference accolades by catching 70 passes for 1,040 yards and seven scores.

Stroughter's combination of receiving and return skills could land him a spot on an NFL roster in 2009.
