04/27/2009 - A closer look at the Giants' picks: Round 2/45 -- Clint Sintim, OLB, 6-3, 256, Virginia...Sintim played outside linebacker in the Cavaliers' 3-4 defense and Giants' coordinator Bill Sheridan, a former linebackers coach until Steve Spagnuolo got the head coaching job in St. Louis, feels that suits the ideas of how the Giants intend to use him. He will play an "up defensive end" role on sure pass situations and will join the pass-rush rotation system.
04/10/2009 - This draft board is littered with undersized pass-rushers, many of whom project as outside linebackers at the next level in a 3-4 scheme: Everette Brown, Larry English, Cody Brown, Lawrence Sidbury. That could slow their development as pros and minimize their rookie contributions. But there's no projection involved with Clint Sintim. Al Groh, the former head coach of the New York Jets, is now the head coach at Virginia and plays a 3-4 scheme at the college level. Sintim started 49 career games at outside linebacker for the Cavaliers and set a school record for his position with 29 sacks. He led all NCAA linebackers with 11 sacks last season and finished second in 2007 with nine. So there is no guesswork with Sintim by a 3-4 team, you draft him, you play him. Sintim is 6-2 1/2, 256 pounds and gave the NFL a 4.75 40 at the combine. He has an arsenal of pass-rush moves from a stand-up position, all of which should make him a premium draft selection (first three rounds). - Rick Gosselin, The Dallas Morning News
Sintim has been a model of consistency ever since arriving on campus, going on to start his final 48 contests during a 49-game career. He emerged as a pass rushing force during his last two seasons, ranking second in school history with 27.0 sacks, the 12th-best total on the Atlantic Coast Conference's all-time record list.
The strong-side linebacker produced 245 tackles for the Cavaliers. Thirty-nine of those were behind the line of scrimmage, the seventh-highest career total by a Virginia player. Twenty of his career 27.0 sacks were registered since the beginning of the 2007 season. Those 27.0 sacks are the most by any active linebacker in the NCAA ranks at the conclusion of the 2008 campaign.
Sintim earned All-American honors from Super Prep as a senior at Garfield High School. He was also named first-team All-State that season, producing 35 tackles and three sacks. He added All-District honors on both offense and defense that season. He also lettered on the school's basketball team.
Sintim spent the 2004 season on Virginia's scout team. He had a stellar 2005 spring camp, emerging as the team's starting strong-side outside linebacker. The Freshman All-Atlantic Coast Conference and Freshman All-American choice was the recipient of the Bill Dudley Award, given to the team's most outstanding first-year player. He ranked fifth on the team with 53 tackles (26 solos). He collected three sacks with seven stops for losses, finishing fifth among the league's freshmen with an average of 4.4 tackles per game.
Sintim started all 12 games in 2006. He only ranked ninth on the squad with 45 tackles (22 solos), but his 10 stops behind the line of scrimmage, including four sacks, ranked second on the squad in both categories. He walked home with the Cavaliers' Rock Weir Award, given to the team's most improved defensive player.
As a junior, Sintim was used more often on the blitz in 2007. All nine of his stops behind the line of scrimmage were sacks, good for losses totaling 48 yards. He added three pressures with a pair of forced fumbles, as he finished third on the team with a career-high 77 tackles (44 solos).
The All-American honorable mention and All-Atlantic Coast Conference second-team choice ranked second in the league with 11 sacks for minus 86 yards, the fifth-best season total in school history. He also made four pressures in 2008 and finished third on the team with 70 tackles (38 solos), picking up All-State first-team recognition.
The finalist for the Dudley Award, given to the top player in the state of Virginia, he was credited with a career-high 13 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, as he recovered two fumbles, caused another and broke up three passes.
Scouting Report
GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 6.22
Body Structure: Sintim has a thick frame with a long wingspan and large hands. His frame is at maximum growth potential, but he has good upper body thickness and the lower body strength to maintain position art the point of attack, if he stays at a low pad level. His bone structure shows good muscle definition in his chest, shoulders and arms. He has good lower body thickness, especially in the thighs and calves.
Athletic Ability: Sintim has the size and upper body strength to hold his ground firmly at the point of attack, but lacks the timed speed to give long chase or the lateral agility needed to redirect and flow to the ball at the opposite side of the field. He has the long arms and large hands to be an efficient wrap-up tackler, but his lack of range might see him better suited to play an inside position in a 3-4 alignment. It was evident at Senior Bowl practices that he did not have the foot speed or closing burst to chase down speedy ball carriers along the perimeter. He has adequate top-end speed for a player his size, but is quick to close on plays in front of him. He runs with a normal stride, but might be a better fit in the middle than on the outside, as he struggles to change direction due to hip stiffness. He shows good urgency closing on the ball, but does not have the ideal plant-&-drive action to recover when he out-runs the play. He has good balance when he keeps his pads down, but gets washed out of the play when he gets too tall in his stance (base gets narrow and he crosses his feet). He has a good closing burst and adequate range playing inside the box, but is a bit of a liability getting back in pass coverage. He plays faster than his timed speed indicates, but his marginal change of direction agility is noticeable. GRADE: 6.3
Football Sense: Sintim is a smart, instinctive player who lined up at the "elephant" back position, which saw him play standing up and with his hand down. He is a disciplined linebacker with good patience waiting for the play to develop, but sometimes that patience is a liability, as he does not really attack the ball with great aggression. He does well in the classroom and will not have problems handling the mental aspect of the game. His business-like approach might be good for him as a middle linebacker, but to play on the edge you need to see a nastier nature and better aggression from him. GRADE: 6.5
Character: Sintim took over as the program's poster boy with the graduation of Chris Long and did not fail in that role. He is a model citizen off the field and takes well to hard coaching. He gets good family support and is the type that will "yes sir, no sir" you to death. GRADE: 6.5
Competitiveness: Sintim is competitive on the field, but might be too disciplined at times. He is rarely caught out of position, but might be the type to fold in a poker game, even when holding four aces (just does not want to gamble, taking a safer approach to making a routine play rather than go for the big hit). That might have been the result of the coaches asking him to play mistake-free football to compensate for the lack of talent around him, as the team could not afford to cover up for him if he played with reckless abandon. GRADE: 6.0
Work Habits: Sintim has a good frame, but you have to wonder if he is going to develop physically. He does what is asked in the training room, but not much more. It was curious that he refused to show off his strength at the NFL Combine or the following Pro Day at the school. He looks like he has adequate strength, but you wonder if there might be some conditioning issues still with the shoulder he damaged in 2006. GRADE: 5.8
ATHLETIC REPORT: GRADE: 6.30
Key and Diagnostic Skills: Sintim is a steady performer with good vision and a feel for blocking schemes. He is a disciplined defender, showing patience to let bootlegs and play-action to develop before attacking too early. He does a good job of reading hats, keeping his head on a swivel, as he is alert to side blocks, using his reach effectively to avoid low blocks. He might be too patient at times, as he seems more concerned about not over-pursuing on the play and fails to deliver when needed to fill the rush lanes on time. When he locates the ball, he is quick to close. He has the field vision to sift through trash and avoid blockers to make the play. He makes good adjustments on the move and is alert to blocking schemes, but will sometimes run himself out of position vs. counters and play action. GRADE: 7.3
Playing Strength and Explosion: Sintim might lack great lateral mobility, but he has a good short-area burst and straight-line quickness to penetrate the inside gaps. With his blitzing ability, he might be more comfortable playing inside, where he can get close to the line to attack through the "A" gap. He plays low to the ground and is quick getting his hands into the blocker on the rise, showing good leg drive to push the lineman back into the pocket. He does a good job of anchoring vs. one-on-one battles, but must become more active using his hands to shed when a lineman gets into his frame. What puts him on his pants too often is the fact that he plays with a narrow base and will lose his balance if a lineman gets into his body. He did a good job of keeping his hands inside his framework as a senior (did not always do this in the past) and has the raw power to take on bigger blockers, but needs to keep his pads down, as he has some problems disengaging when he gets too tall in his stance. He is not really that aggressive working through traffic, but has the ability to control his man while adjusting and reacting off the initial block. When he stays low in his pads, he is explosive delivering his hit, but he has to maintain that pad level or he will get positioned. GRADE: 6.5
Lateral Pursuit/Range: Sintim appears too stiff in his hips to change direction in an instant. When he out-runs a play, he lacks the hip snap to quickly recover. His problems on the move occur when he plays too high in his stance, as he has too much hip stiffness to simply get back into the action. When he gets tall in his stance, blockers have good success driving him away from the ball. He does take decent angles, but it looks as if his motor will shut down if he has to travel long distances to make the play. He is not the type that will make plays along the boundaries much, as he just lacks fluidity in his hips to get there often. GRADE: 5.4
Use of Hands: Sintim has large hands and a great wingspan, yet he struggles to shed blocks due to poor hand usage, won't shock a blocker with his marginal punch and rarely uses his leaping ability to try and deflect throws at the line of scrimmage. He does a poor job of looking the ball in and fails to extend for passes outside his framework, lacking any sort of pass thievery skills. He also short arms too much when engaging blockers, making him struggle in attempts to shed. He is not a natural hands catcher and uses his body too much to absorb the ball. He gets good placement on tight ends and backs in attempts to reroute in the short-area passing game. With his big, thick hands, he might struggle to catch the ball outside his frame, but he can shock and jolt a lethargic blocker when engaging at the point of attack. GRADE: 5.7
Tackling Ability: Sintim is an adequate tackler, but only when he plays at a good pad level. He gets ridden back too often when he plays tall and while he is more effective in space and a decent wrap-up tackler, he is not one who will simply blow up an opponent. He shows adequate body control on the move, but is better served when the action comes to him rather than giving chase due to adequate foot speed (will compensate by taking good angles). He has that short punch to rock the linemen back on their heels and is good at wrapping and securing as a tackler when he stays down in his pads. He has the functional strength to explode behind his hits and is a physical space tackler who can break down, wrap up and drive the ball carrier back, but might be a better fit operating between the tackles, as he lacks range to pursue on outside plays. GRADE: 6.4
Run Defense: Sintim's low pad level and leg drive allows him to meet the lead blocker, neutralize the opponent and clog the rush lane. He is effective at creating piles, using his wingspan and hands well to prevent the ball carrier from gaining forward momentum. He seems to lack awareness to the pass in flight and it is very rare to see him use his reach to either high point the ball or to deflect throws at the line of scrimmage (three pass deflections and no interceptions in 49 games). His is not really slippery playing in space, but does a nice job of scraping through the seam to generate a strong hit to stop the ball carrier's forward progress. When he gets too upright, he fails to hold ground on plays directed right at him. When he keeps his pads down, he is quick to fill, showing much better stack-&-tackle ability than when he gets too tall in his stance. When he locates the inside rush lanes, he takes good angles in pursuit, doing a good job of slipping under blocks. His closing burst lets him attain leverage to make the plays, but he just lacks the lateral agility to meet plays that are too wide. GRADE: 6.8
Pass Defense: Sintim might be a better fit inside, as he proved at Senior Bowl practices that he is not capable of handling pass coverage responsibilities outside the short area. He does not have the loose hips to break cleanly out of his backpedal and he takes too many false steps when trying to change direction to suddenly flow to the ball. Despite the praises from his coaching staff, his lack of range and foot speed makes him a liability defending vs. the pass, especially since he lacks the natural hands to go for the interception and has poor timing trying to high point the ball. Too often, runners out of the backfield gain success vs. him on underneath routes, as he appears a step slow in attempts to mirror. GRADE: 5.5
Zone Defense: Sintim can get decent depth in his pass drops and shows good eyes playing in the zone. He uses his hands effectively in attempts to reroute tight ends and backs in the short area, but he lacks the hip flexibility to come out of his breaks cleanly and this allows speedier receivers to easily gobble up his cushion and get behind him. He does not have the speed to recover when beaten, making him a pass coverage liability even on plays in front of him, as he can't redirect well. When he sees the play develop, he shows good urgency to close on the ball, but he lacks that instinctive feel to drop back deep in the zone. While he can accelerate some to the underneath throw, his tight hips impede his progress. GRADE: 5.6
Pass Rush and Blitz: Sintim seems to be better rushing the passer from a three-point stance than when standing up. His best avenue to the quarterback is when he is able to come up on the rise to get under a blocker's pads and push the lineman back into the pocket. When he stands up, he is too tall and leaves his chest exposed. When that happens, he fails to execute the moves needed to counter and slip under when a blocker is able to latch on to him. He has had good success rushing the passer, but does not have the speed or burst to be much of an impact coming off the edge at the NFL level. If shifted to inside linebacker, he could have success in the pros by shooting the gaps rather than looping around the outside. In a straight-line burst, he can shoot the gaps and pressure the pocket, but his stiff hips prevent him from working through blocks quickly. GRADE: 7.5
Compares To: NAPOLEAN HARRIS, ex Minnesota -- Sintim is a solid playmaker with good field awareness, but like Harris is a better fit for middle linebacker, as he lacks the loose hips, change of direction agility and second gear to give chase with receivers on the outside. He needs to develop better work habits and is politely called a "gamer" by the coaching staff. He is a good tackler playing downhill, but he needs to work on his hand placement, as blockers have success locking on and controlling him in close quarters. Still, even though some consider him a good fit at strong-side linebacker, he does not have the range or foot speed to chase down ball carriers in long pursuit and his zone coverage skills are a lot to be desired.
OVERALL GRADE: 6.29

2008 Game Analysis
Southern California Sintim opened the season with five tackles (3 solos), including one that stopped halfback Stafon Johnson for a 3-yard gain inside the red zone Asked after the game about the atmosphere playing in the Rose Bowl and Sintim stated, "It was an incredible atmosphere to play in. Unfortunately we didn't perform better. Today they were better, and they deserved to win the way they did. This team knows what we can do. Obviously, you never want the outcome to be like it was today, but we will try to use it as a learning experience, and move forward. We need to execute better. Anytime you get your butt kicked like we did today, it is humbling. We know what we have to do, and now we just have to execute." Rush Coverage Assignment: HB#2-C.J. Gable (6;00-200)- 9 carries/73 yards/1 touchdown/33 long; no receptions.

A lot of guys put a lot into it. After last week we were demoralized by our performance and we came out this week and had a better effort; a lot of guys made plays and stepped up. We put a zero up on the board and that's big. I had a lot of pressures; I guess you could say my mentor (Chris Long) was really helping me out. I was able to get free and a lot of guys helped me out. I was able to get the single block and get free on a couple of quarterback pressures. Maryland is a great team and they have showed that in the last two games they played. We weren't the favored team but we came out here and performed. Whenever these teams play, you can assume the record is 0-0. We came out here and performed really well." Rush Coverage Assignment: HB#23-Da'Rel Scott (5:11-192)-11 carries/36 yards/12 long; 1 reception/16 yards.
East Carolina Sintim delivered seven tackles (3 solos) and two sacks for minus 14 yards, as he also broke up one pass He forced ECU to punt with 5:06 left in the game after sacking QB Pat Pinkney for an 8-yard loss on third-&-7 He again sacked Pinkney for minus 6 yards on the Pirates' next series, causing a fumble that he recovered at the ECU 40 Record Watch: Sintim has been involved in eight sacks this season and now has 24 career sacks, tied with Patrick Kerney (1995-98) for fourth in school history Also second behind Darryl Blackstock (27 from 202-04) for most sacks by a linebacker in UVa history Talking about the team's improvement of the defense over the past two weeks, he replied, "With the loss of Chris Long and Jeffrey Fitzgerald and all those guys, a lot of people didn't think we'd be able to get as much pressure as we have but the coaches are doing a good job of putting us in the right schemes to make plays. Guys are out there getting a lot of pressure, like Antonio Appleby and John-Kevin Dolce. Dolce is one of the younger guys who has really stepped up and made a big impact on our third down defense. A lot of guys are stepping up to do their part and make this defense special." On recording two sacks and a fumble recovery, he noted, "I just want to do whatever I can to help this team out. Whether it's covering, rushing the passer, or however, I was just able to beat my guy a couple of times today. I just really wanted to step up and be that guy that the team depends on as a playmaker to help this team win." On the senior leadership among the linebackers: "Me, Jon Cooper, and Antonio Appleby have been together for quite some time, we have played in this defense for quite some time. We all know what is expected of us and we are expected to lead this team. A lot of guys have been around and we are just trying to be the leaders of this defense. A lot of younger guys are on the defense right now and we are just trying to be the guys who step up and make plays for this defense. We have been able to do that the last couple of weeks." Today we worked hard for an entire 60 minutes, and it paid off. The resiliency on this team is undying and we work hard to get victories like this one." .Record Watch: His sack gave him 25.0 for his career, moving to fourth on the school all-time record list Rush Coverage Assignment: HB#20-Shaun Draughn (6:00-205)-30 carries/138 yards/18 long; no receptions.
Georgia Tech Sintim was in on two sacks, the fifth game in a row he's been in on at least one sack. His five-game streak is the longest by a UVa linebacker since Darryl Blackstock had a five-game run back in 2002 The team captain leveled QB Josh Nesbitt on third-&-10 for a 3-yard loss to force Tech to punt in the third quarter Stripped the ball from Nesbitt on a second-&-goal bootleg at the Cavaliers' 7-yard line, where Virginia recovered the ball later in the third stanza In the fourth quarter, his third-&-7 sack of Nesbitt again brought out Tech's punting squad Rush Coverage Assignment: HB#21-Jonathan Dwyer (6:00-228)-17 carries/70 yards/1 touchdown/12 long; 1 reception/9 yards.
