04/28/2009 - A closer look at the Patriots' picks: 4/123 -- Rich Ohrnberger, G, 6-2, 297, Penn State...With Stephen Neal slowed by injuries the past few years and a bevy of backups who can only handle the workload on a limited basis, it wouldn't hurt to have an up-and-coming guard learn on the job in 2009. Ohrnberger appears to have the personality and the talent to handle that role. On top of it, he's not a burly, oversized lineman, which means he fits perfectly in New England's screen-pass oriented offense. He can get down the field quickly and that will be a boost when the likes of Kevin Faulk and Wes Welker are worming their way up the field for extra yards.

04/28/2009 - QUOTE TO NOTE: "We had a lot of good years together, my offense and I, so it was a lot of fun. Other guys chipped in too, it wasn't just me, but I seem to get pegged as a comedian." -- Rich Ohrnberger on his reputation as a lighthearted player.

      Overview

Ohrnberger, tackle Gerald Cadogan and Rimington Trophy-winning center A.Q. Shipley all made first-team All-Big Ten. Ohrnberger's toughness inside fit in Penn State's "Spread HD" perfectly; NFL teams using a zone-blocking system will find Ohrnberger a good fit.

      Analysis

Positives: Strong mauler with nasty attitude. … Quick and strong hand placement inside his man's jersey. … Good enough foot quickness to angle his tackle inside to create a hole or to reach linebackers at the second level. … Handles quick linebackers well at the point of attack. … Quick set in pass pro. … Anchors well against most tackles and will toss them to the ground if they give up their leverage. … Blocks well on the move, opening cutback lanes for the running back.

Negatives: Undersized, lacking height and width, but a bit large in the middle. … Is not a great athlete. … Will struggle to move larger tackles. … Doesn't have a dominant punch. … Whiffs against blitzing linebackers and can be over-armed by taller, quicker tackles. … Would be a better fit at center than guard if he can make the move.

      2007 Season

In 2007, his second season as a starter, Ohrnberger began turning his experience and natural physical gifts into becoming one of the top offensive linemen in the Big Ten. A starter in every game in 2007, 12 at left guard, he was selected secondteam All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. He should be a strong candidate for first-team all-conference accolades this season. Ohrnberger and the offensive line were instrumental in helping Rodney Kinlaw post the fourth 1,000-yard rushing season by a Nittany Lion in the past six years. Kinlaw's total of 1,326 yards was ninth-highest in school season history. Ohrnberger helped Penn State average 400.1 yards per game ??? 193.8 rushing and 206.3 passing ??? and 5.5 yards per play. The Nittany Lions ran for 200 yards or more six times, with 270 yards against Texas A&M in the Valero Alamo Bowl, 256 yards against Iowa and 251 yards against Purdue. In the season-opening 59-0 victory over Florida International, Penn State amassed 236 yards on the ground, with five rushing touchdowns. Ohrnberger was instrumental in helping Penn State gain a season-high 270 rushing yards and 6.6 yards per play in the win over Texas A&M. The O-Line paved the way for Penn State to gain 2,519 rushing yards in 2007, with 27 touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt, up 0.6 from 2006. He saw action on 992 snaps, fifth-highest on the squad, and led by 89 plays in the Iowa game.

      2006 Season

Ohrnberger played in every game and started the last nine games at right guard. He helped the Nittany Lions rush for a season-high 389 yards against Youngstown State, their highest total in four years, and gain 233 yards rushing against Northwestern. At Purdue, Ohrnberger and the O-Line paved the way for 240 yards on the ground. The Lions rushed for 212 yards against Temple to record Penn State's fourth 200-yard rushing game of the season. He helped Tony Hunt become just the sixth Nittany Lion to compile a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons, finishing second in Penn State career rushing with 3,320 yards. Ohrnberger was on the field for 784 snaps, second-highest among all offensive linemen and third-highest among all offensive players. He played a season-high 86 snaps in the 12-0 win at Purdue.
