04/28/2009 - A closer look at the Texans' picks: Round 3/77 -- Antoine Caldwell, C, 6-3, 309, Alabama...The Texans needed to add depth to their offensive line, and Caldwell is smart and a leader. He is one of the most consistent snappers in college football, but he also has played guard and filled in at tackle, giving the Texans the versatility they need in a backup offensive lineman. He will likely play on special teams and be a "super" backup on game days.
02/06/2009 - PRO POTENTIAL: OC Antoine Caldwell -- Considered one of the top centers in college football. However, centers are not always a priority in the NFL, and Caldwell is expected to be a mid-round draft pick.
One of the most consistent snappers in college football, the four-time starter and two-time team captain began his career as an offensive guard before finding a home in the middle of the field. He also has filled in at offensive tackle when injuries depleted the depth along the Crimson Tide front wall. The unquestioned "heart and soul" of the offensive unit, he was the recipient of the 2008 Mal Moore Leadership Award.
The anchor of one of the most physical offensive lines in the major college ranks, Caldwell has outstanding agility, foot speed and flexibility. His ability to handle the bull rush and widen the rush lanes saw Alabama improve its 60th-place national ranking in rush offense (149.23 ypg) in 2007 to a 30th-place ranking in 2008 (184.64 ypg). The Tide's success on the ground also greatly improved the numbers in the win column, as Alabama rushers scored 32 times in Caldwell's final season, compared to 19 times during his junior year.
Caldwell was the premier athlete on Montgomery's powerhouse Lee High School football team. He allowed just one quarterback sack and graded 85 percent for blocking consistency as a senior, earning first-team All-State honors. That year, he was rated the 10th-best overall prospect in the state of Alabama by Super Prep magazine.
One of four All-State offensive linemen to enroll at Alabama, Caldwell spent the 2004 season performing as an offensive guard on the scout team. In 2005, he took over left guard duties for the first 11 games, moving to center vs. Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. He registered 62 knockdowns while participating on 772 plays. He was named first-team Freshman All-American by Rivals.com, adding second-team accolades from College Football News. He added All-SEC Freshman Team honors and was selected SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance vs. Florida.
As a sophomore, Caldwell was firmly entrenched at center, starting all 13 games. He was one of five players on the squad to log over 800 snaps (810), as he produced 58 knockdowns, leading the team in that category in four contests. He was selected SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week vs. Vanderbilt and chosen team Player of the Game vs. Louisiana-Monroe, serving as squad captain in that game and also vs. Louisiana State.
Caldwell was named offensive team captain in 2007. He was a member of the Rimington Award (nation's best center) Watch List and started the first five games at center. Injuries forced the staff to shift Caldwell to left offensive guard for the Houston clash and the following week, he started at right guard vs. Mississippi.
He was ruled ineligible for four midseason games, as he and several athletes were suspended for what school administrators called "a violation of institutional policy involving impermissible receipt of textbooks." When Caldwell returned to the field for the final two contests, he was shifted to right offensive tackle vs. Auburn before moving back to center for the Independence Bowl. Despite all the position shuffling, he graded 84.67 percent for blocking consistency, delivering eight touchdown-resulting blocks.
The 2008 season saw Caldwell garner the national attention that escaped him earlier in his career. The Rimington Award finalist earned All-American first-team recognition from The Sporting News and AFCA. He also received All-Southeastern Conference first-team honors. He started all 14 games at center, ranking second on the team with 92 knockdowns, as he finished with an 85.93 percent blocking consistency grade.
Scouting Report
GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 7.06
Body Structure: Caldwell has a well-built frame with broad shoulders, a wide base, good muscle tone throughout, thick thighs and calves, good chest thickness, long arms and large hands.
Athletic Ability: Caldwell is a well-built athlete with impressive forward explosion and initial quickness, but appears a bit stiff in his hips, as he loses his burst when having to redirect. He is best playing along the line or on short pulls, as he might have good timed speed, but seems to labor when trying to get into the second level. He plays on his feet well and has the first step needed to chip and seal the linebackers shooting the gaps. He has the upper body strength to neutralize the bull rush and good balance along with proper hand placement, as he is quick to recoil and reset his hands. He can adjust to movement at the line, but does not appear to have the suddenness to get out and make plays in space. He shows more explosive movement moving forward and needs to improve his lateral agility, one of the few weak areas in his game. Still, he plays with a wide base and will generally win one-on-one battles, thanks to his lower body strength. GRADE: 7.0
Football Sense: Caldwell makes all the line calls. He knows everyone's assignments and has filled in capably when asked to perform at guard and tackle (lack of lateral agility does pose problems playing on the edge, as he struggles to redirect vs. the edge rush -- see 2007 Auburn game). He is a very intelligent and instinctive athlete and also excelled in the classroom, becoming the first player in Tide football history to graduate in less than three years. He has natural football instincts and does a nice job of scanning the field to locate twists and games, but for some reason, he does not react as quickly when plays break down in the backfield. He has shown the ability to handle assignments playing in a complex system and it is very rare to see him make a mental mistake. Even though he has marginal lateral agility, he does a good job of adjusting to stunts. GRADE: 8.0
Character: Despite being suspended for four games in 2007 due to the Tide's textbook scandal, Caldwell is a model citizen with great character traits. He comes from a very supportive family and has received team awards for his leadership skills. He is well spoken and well respected by the staff and teammates. GRADE: 6.5
Competitiveness: Caldwell gives total effort throughout the play. He plays with a wide base and compensates for adequate upper body strength (marginal hand punch) with a strong lower body. He flashes occasional nastiness in his performance and is the type that seeks a challenge. You can see on film that he won't back down from a confrontation (see 2008 Arkansas, LSU and Auburn games). GRADE: 6.9
Work Habits: Caldwell is a hard worker in the training room. He is a self-starter who works on improving his craft year round. He is a highly motivated type who takes well to hard coaching. He is the unquestioned leader in the locker room and will not hesitate to grab teammates "by the throat" if that what it takes to get them to perform to a high level. GRADE: 6.9
ATHLETIC REPORT: GRADE: 6.50
Initial Quickness: Caldwell has above average initial quickness off the snap, but despite good timed speed for his position, he does labor running long distances and is not a great space player, as he appears too stiff in his hips to generate explosive lateral agility. He has the speed to make the reach and he down blocks with effectiveness, but has just adequate burst getting into the second level to stalk linebackers. His quick first step lets him get advantage with a defender over his head. He has the balance and leg drive to finish blocks. GRADE: 7.4
Lateral Movement: This is perhaps Caldwell's weakest area. He does not do a good job of moving side to side and even though he has experience at guard and tackle, he showed in the 2007 Auburn game that he struggles quite a bit in his retreat and kick slide when taking on edge rushers. He plays with a low center of gravity, but his feet tend to die when he has to suddenly shift direction. He is obviously not a space player due to his marginal redirection skills. GRADE: 5.2
Balance/Stays On Feet: Caldwell has very good lower body strength to neutralize the bull rush. He plays with a low center of gravity and comes off the snap with a wider base than most centers. However, he needs to improve his hand usage, as he will expose his chest, and with just adequate upper body strength, defenders have good success walking him back into the pocket when they get into his body. He has good foot balance for his position, but will have to improve his upper body strength to better lock out and control. He does move his feet well moving forward to sustain. With his lower body balance, he can stay on his blocks, but is just an adequate finisher if he has to move laterally to make the play. GRADE: 7.7
Explosion/Pop: Caldwell comes off the snap with good leg explosion in his initial step, but his acceleration falters when having to play in space. He latches on to his man adequately and needs to develop a stronger hand punch, but he will get up on a bull rusher quickly in the trenches. He plays with good lower body strength to hold ground at the point of attack, but until he develops more upper body strength and uses his hands more, he is more of a push-and-shove type than a classic mauler. GRADE: 6.5
Run Blocking: Caldwell has a very good feel for taking angles. He comes off the snap low and with a wide base, doing a nice job of maintaining the rush lanes. He would be even more effective once he improves his upper body power. With his low stance, he has had good success leveraging, especially vs. the bull rush (see 2008 Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas State games). He fires off the snap with good explosion, but must do a better job of getting his hands into the defender to control. With his balance and leg drive, he is able to root out and drive off bigger defensive tackles when he keeps his pads down, though. He is not the type that will get too high in his stance or chest-block. While he develops upper body power, he can compensate by out-finessing his opponent, but you would like to see him roll his hips better. GRADE: 7.4
Pass Blocking: Caldwell is a solid pass protector when battling in the trenches, but he gets caught up in the action at times and tries to do too much, failing to recognize plays breaking down in the backfield. He works well in combination with his guards playing in a phone booth, but looks sluggish when having to redirect. He has that above average lower body strength to effectively anchor vs. the bull rush and shows the vision and feet to react to twists and games. He has good knee bend, but his flexibility is inconsistent, as he will bend at the waist when having to change direction. When he sets his wide base, he has the balance to generate decent pop on contact. He has the ability to play flat-footed, but must do a better job of extending his hands, as he is prone to short arming at times. GRADE: 6.6
Pulling/Trapping: On the short pulls and traps, Caldwell gets off the line adequately, but is not a space player due to lateral movement issues. He has good balance at the line of scrimmage and shows adequate upper body strength when widening the rush lanes. He does a nice job of playing on his feet, but must do a better job of shifting and adjusting his weight playing on the move. GRADE: 5.6
Adjust on Linebacker Downfield: Caldwell does not seem to have the explosive hip snap to stalk defenders into the second level. He does have a good concept for angling, but needs to get up on the linebacker quicker than he has shown. You just do not see the change of direction skills needed to wheel and cut off in the open. GRADE: 5.5
Use of Hands/Punch: Caldwell needs to finish better with his hands. He has an adequate punch, lacking the upper body strength to shock and jolt. He is more of a push-and-shove type and has been walked back into the pocket at times (see 2008 Arkansas and Tennessee) when he leaves his chest exposed. He does keep his hands inside the frame, though, as he has the large, heavy hands to control, when he locks on securely. He can reset his hands quickly, but he needs to use them more to control and develop a stronger punch. GRADE: 5.6
Reactions/Awareness: Caldwell is very alert to twists and games. He scans the field well and keeps his head on a swivel, looking for secondary targets after making his initial block. He has a good feel for the bull rush, staying low in his pads to root out the bigger defenders. He has a very good concept for angling, but is a better battler in the trenches than when on the move. He needs to be more alert to plays breaking down in the backfield (see 2007 Auburn game), but he has good balance and body control to anchor. He shows good ability to play flat-footed, but you would like to see him move better in space. GRADE: 7.5
Long Snap Skills: Does not long snap, but he does have the large, soft hands and adequate speed on the shotgun snap to fill in as a snapper in an emergency. GRADE: N/A
Compares To: JEFF HARTINGS: ex-Pittsburgh -- Like the former Steeler, Caldwell is a sound technician with very good initial quickness. He plays with a wide base, but is more of a trench battler than one who can operate in space. He has experience at every line position and has a keen knowledge for taking angles. He needs to improve his upper body strength and protect his body better from defenders, but for consistent performances, Caldwell will deliver every game.
OVERALL GRADE-6.45

That was followed by the Tide blocker clearing a rush lane for a 10-yard run by Roy Upchurch and on first-and-goal, Wilson followed Caldwell into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown run that concluded an 88-yard, 10-play late fourth quarter drive that knotted the score at 20 all After the game, Caldwell told the media, "This was one of those games. I thought we were well-prepared. We did pretty much exactly what we went over as a team. I have to give those guys (Georgia) credit. They pretty much did what they have been doing the whole season. They just do it really well I tip my hat to those guys. They played hard and they got it done tonight." Houston Injuries to the starting offensive line saw the coaches shift Caldwell to right guard, where he was responsible for a pair of touchdown-resulting blocks Early in the first quarter, Caldwell leveled defensive end Phillip Hunt on a 1-yard touchdown run by QB John Parker Wilson that capped a 13-play, 80-yard series Later in the third stanza, he flipped defensive tackle Ell Ash out of the way on a 4-yard scoring burst by Glen Coffee Head to Head Competition-DT#90-Ell Ash (6:05-293)-Two solo tackles Offensive Impact-Caldwell recorded seven knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 92 percent Helped the team gain 190 yards with two touchdowns on 46 carries (4.13 ypc) and generate 347 total yards on 73 snaps (4.75 yards per play).
Mississippi Starting left guard senior Justin Britt missed the game while attending to family business in Birmingham where his mother, Vera Britt, was hospitalized following an accident that occurred in Tuscaloosa.
