      Overview

Much like the Pac-10 Conference, where California's Alex Mack and Oregon's Max Unger battled for the title of that league's premier center, Luigs had a similar situation, as he and Alabama's Antoine Caldwell split All-Southeastern Conference first-team honors over their last three seasons. While the Pac-10 duo is known for their physicality, the SEC tandem is known more for their quickness and field savvy.

The two-time All-American was a three-time finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's top center. He captured that honor as a junior and has been the centerpiece of the Razorback's front wall, compiling a string of 49 consecutive starts, every game he appeared in at Arkansas. He has also excelled in the classroom, as he was a member of the school's Academic Honor Roll in each of his last four seasons.

At Pulaski Academy, Luigs was a three-year starter on the offensive line, lining up at center and offensive tackle, as well as defensive end. He was named to the Associated Press Arkansas Super Team and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas team as a senior, adding All-Metro squad honors as a junior. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.

Luigs was the 2003 recipient of the Brandon Burlsworth Award, named after the former Razorback All-American offensive guard. Super Prep rated him as the 12th-best overall prospect in Arkansas while The Morning News had him rated 14th. In each of his three varsity seasons, he graded at least 90 percent for blocking consistency.

As a senior, Luigs capped his prep career by helping his squad win its first state title (Class 3A) in school history with a 13-2 mark. As a junior defensive tackle, he recorded 77 tackles (26 solos), four sacks, three more stops for losses of 30 yards and two pressures.

Luigs was heavily recruited by Louisiana State, Memphis, Alabama, Iowa, Kansas State and Nebraska, but decided to enroll at Arkansas. He spent the 2004 season on the scout team, seeing action mostly as an offensive guard, but also performed at center.

In 2005, the redshirt freshman earned Freshman All-American and Freshman All-Southeastern Conference honors. He started 10 games, lining up at right guard in seven contests and at center in three late-season clashes. He sat out the Alabama game with a high ankle sprain, but went on to register 53 knockdowns with eight touchdown-resulting blocks, posting an 84.2 percent grade for blocking consistency.

Luigs was a Rimington Trophy finalist, adding All-SEC first-team and All-American second-team honors in 2006. He made 34 knockdowns with seven touchdown-resulting blocks. He graded 85.1 percent for a running attack that led the conference and ranked fourth in the nation with an average of 228.5 yards per game on the ground. He led the team in knockdowns three times, as he was part of a front wall that led the major college ranks, giving up just nine quarterback sacks for the campaign. He also recorded one tackle.

Luigs captured the Rimington Trophy in 2007 and shared the SEC's Jacobs Blocking Trophy (conference's top offensive lineman) with Alabama's Andre Smith. The consensus All-American first-team choice was credited with a career-high 84 knockdowns and led the league's interior linemen with 14 touchdown-resulting blocks. With their center leading the way, the Razorbacks again led the SEC and ranked fourth in the country with an average of 286.54 yards per game rushing. Arkansas also ranked second in the league and 17th nationally in total offense with an average of 450.0 yards per game.

With both Darren McFadden and Felix Jones having left Arkansas for the NFL, the team's once formidable running game came to a screeching halt in 2008. Luigs was again named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, but lost out to Alabama's Antoine Caldwell for first-team All-SEC honors. He delivered 66 knockdowns and graded 85.42 percent for blocking consistency. But the Hogs finished 97th in the nation in rushing (113.5 ypg). The team's offensive line was the main problem, as the front wall placed 118th among the 119 major colleges, allowing 46 sacks for the season.

      Scouting Report

      GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 7.36

Athletic Ability: Luigs shows excellent initial quickness and good hand placement. He is very light on his feet for a center and uses his timed speed to compensate for strength issues. Even with his acceleration, he does lunge and over-extend when getting into his second-level blocks, though. Still, he moves well, showing balance, flexibility and lateral agility on running plays. He lacks ideal lower body strength, relying more on his quickness, short area burst and angles to block. With his foot speed, you would think that he could shift his weight for balance in pass protection, but while he has good knee bend, he will revert to bending at the waist too often. When he does bend his knees properly, he has enough burst to get to the second level with ease. GRADE: 6.8

Football Sense: Luigs has very good field smarts and that intelligence also translates to the classroom. He has earned several academic honors and shows the ability to take plays from the chalkboard to the playing field with minimal reps. Even in a complex offense, he does not need more than normal reps to retain plays. He is quick to locate twists and games and takes pride in his ability to make proper calls and adjustments. GRADE: 8.3

Character: Luigs is a well-respected player who excels on the field and classroom. He is a high-character type who comes from a supportive family environment. He is well liked by everyone and takes pride in his leadership role (usually the player asked the most questions by the media after games). GRADE: 7.5

Competitiveness: Luigs likes to compete, but he plays his best when challenged. He is not a road grader, but plays tough and will not back down from a confrontation. He competes until the whistle and even when over-powered, he will try anything he can to stay with the play. Even when he finds himself on the ground, he will try to "bury" his opponent. The thing you see on film is that he has no "quit" in his game, even when out-matched and out-muscled. GRADE: 7.2

Work Habits: Luigs is a hard worker, but needs to increase his lower body strength. He is a self-motivator who takes well to hard coaching and relishes his role as a team leader. Even though he lacks brute strength, he is the most-sound technician among SEC blockers. He has great field smarts, as he makes all the blocking calls and knows each lineman's assignments. GRADE: 7.0

      ATHLETIC REPORT. GRADE: 6.56

Initial Quickness: Luigs has excellent initial quickness off the snap, using explosion and technique to compensate for a lack of ideal strength in attempts to shock a lethargic defender. He shows good hand technique to widen the rush lane and has the acceleration needed to get into the second level. He shows a sudden burst coming off the ball to gain advantage. The thing you notice is that he can snap and get his hands up and into defender immediately. He has a quick first step and set up. He has the athletic agility and balance to keep his feet vs. the bull rush, but lacks a strong anchor to prevent from getting walked back into the pocket. GRADE: 7.8

Lateral Movement: Luigs might bend at the waist more than you would like to see in the open field, but his lateral agility is one of his better assets, along with his field awareness. He displays a good lateral slide that allows him to pick up defenders sneaking through the gaps (best taking on defenders playing over his side than over his head). He can slide with ease in either direction, but lacks lower body strength to anchor. He does a nice job of playing over his feet and staying under control when sliding in pass protection, but will get a little reckless and lunge into his blocks when he thinks he might not make impact quick enough on running plays. GRADE: 6.8

Balance/Stays On Feet: Luigs has better balance at the line of scrimmage than on the move. He does have a strong angle concept, but more often than not, you will see him lunge and over-extend trying to stalk second level defenders. At the point of attack, he will generally need help from his guards in attempts to stonewall bull rushers. He is better when taking on defenders on his side, as he does not have the strong anchor to hold ground with the bigger nose guards lining up over his head. When he gets too high in his pass set, he struggles to recover and gain leverage. When he gets a good fit with his head and hands, he does an efficient job of rolling his hips and driving his legs to get movement, but he just lacks the lower body power to stymie the bigger nose guards without assistance from other blockers. If he bulks up a bit, he could provide some value at offensive guard earlier in his NFL career, as he shows functional balance on the pull. He has more than enough speed to mirror the pass rusher's moves and finishes with aggression, but just lacks raw power. What he lacks is the strength to sustain working vs. the bull rush, as he allows the transfer too often. GRADE: 6.3

Explosion/Pop: Luigs' game is based on his foot quickness, balance and hand technique, as he lacks the raw strength to consistently generate movement off the snap. He needs to be active with his hands and play with a wide base, or bigger defenders have success walking him back into the pocket. He has adequate upper body strength, but his problems holding ground is due to marginal power in his base. Until he improves in this area, he will need constant help from his guards when trying to neutralize NFL bull rushers and nose guards. Once he makes contact, he can be neutralized by the larger defenders (they engulf him, see 2008 Tulsa and 2007 North Texas games) and this results in him abandoning his hand placement to lean into the defender, causing him to fall off some blocks. While he lacks ideal explosion behind his hand punch to create movement, he is a sound technician who can get away with being a push-and-shove type. GRADE: 5.4

Run Blocking: Luigs shows good snap speed when he generates proper knee bend coming off the line. He explodes with a flat back and fits well for the beginning of his slide. Even though he lacks leg strength, his explosion off the ball usually gets the surge needed to generate movement. He is a bit inconsistent at controlling the defender with his hands, as he does not have the lower body power to anchor. He also tends to get high in his stance at times, causing him to chest block. He also needs to do a better job of rolling his hips, but shows improvement (will waist bend and loses leverage doing so). GRADE: 6.8

Pass Blocking: Luigs is a decent pass protector, but must show better knee bend and a stronger hand jolt. He has very good timed speed for his position, but does struggle when having to redirect (waist bends at times). He is more of a foot shuffler and will be on the ground when he fails to step over trash or use his hands to protect his legs. He has the knee bend to solidify his anchor, but it will be negated vs. a strong bull rush due to lower body strength issues. He does show enough foot speed to slide when trying to face up on slippery in-line rushers, but he just lacks that forceful punch to stop defenders in their tracks. He is very alert to stunts and blitzes, keeping his head on a good swivel to locate defenders working down the line. While he lacks the lower body strength to anchor down vs. most defensive tackles, his technique, positioning and hand placement helps him in preventing the pass rushers from taking the short route to the quarterback. When he gives the defender a soft shoulder, he will struggle to lock out. He needs to set low to prevent from slipping off blocks. His improved balance and short area quickness allowed him to do a much better job of adjusting to the blitz in 2008. GRADE: 6.4

Pulling/Trapping: Luigs might be a very capable blockers on traps and pulls, as his speed could make him valuable as a guard in a zone-blocking scheme. He has the ability to snap and get out of his stance with good balance on the short pulls, but for some reason, he strikes with marginal knee bend working in space. He is light on his feet running down the line of scrimmage in attempts to impact on the edge, turn and seal. He is athletic working in the short area, as he has the lateral movements to get out front on sweeps, but needs to do a better job with his balance when heading up field. GRADE: 6.8

Adjust on Linebacker Downfield: Luigs makes the attempt to climb with balance after bumping the one-tech types to strike the second-level defenders, but he does not show the same knee bend and balance going long distances to get the controlled wall-off effect. He takes good angles and is a good drive blocker, but he needs to improve his hip snap and stay in control, as more often than not, he will lunge and over-extend when having to get deep into the second level. When he takes good angles, he can wheel and change direction to target defenders up field. GRADE: 5.3

Use of Hands/Punch: While Luigs is active with his hands, he lacks much force behind his punch to shock and jolt. He needs to keep his hands inside his frame more, as he does get a bit careless with them, taking too many glancing blows rather than locking on to control. His inability to sustain blocks for long is more evident when called upon to drive block and widen the rush lanes. When he generates proper hand usage, he can lock on and gain advantage over his defenders. He has improved his ability to use his legs to move the opponent away from the play. He seems to be complacent executing just one punch when trying gain control to steer out his man. He does have quick hands, but he needs to punch with much better authority. He uses his hands well to control working in the short area, but will short-arm when blocking on the move. While he fails to put force behind his hand punch, he will reset them quickly. When he places his hands suddenly and accurately, he will immediately gain advantage over the defender. GRADE: 5.8

Reactions/Awareness: Few players show Luigs' awareness on the field. He has that ease of movement to shift his weight back and good knee bend to slide and mirror pass rushers working in the trenches, but will revert to waist bending, losing leverage. He sees twists and stunts coming almost immediately and has the athletic agility to adjust at the line of scrimmage, but needs to move his feet better instead of reaching when playing in space. His short-area burst allows him to lock on to the defender, as he is quick to locate the opponent when working through trash (needs to use his hands to protect his feet better on the move, though). The thing you notice on film is his ability to get all his linemates in place. The staff calls him a "coach on the field." GRADE: 8.2

Long Snap Skills: Luigs has never handled these duties, but he could be a good backup type for long snaps in the pros. He also shows good quickness snapping for the shotgun.

Compares To: ERIC HEITMAN: San Francisco-Chicago -- Both are highly intelligent blockers with very good initial explosion off the snap to get into the defender in an instant. Luigs needs to greatly improve his lower body strength, as he does not have the anchor to prevent bigger NFL types from walking him back into the pocket. With his speed and quickness off the snap, he could see action as an offensive guard earlier in his career. He also needs to be more forceful with his hand strikes, as he does not always sustain and will short-arm or lunge into his blocks when asked to take on second-level defenders. In a zone-blocking scheme, where his guards can assist him, he could bring better value than in a system where he will have to play with a defender over his head.

      OVERALL GRADE: 6.69

      Career Notes

      2008 Game Analysis

Western Illinois … In the team's first game for 2008, Luigs recorded a season-high 96 percent blocking consistency grade, posting a pair of touchdown-resulting blocks for a unit that totaled 394 yards … Midway through the third quarter, he took down nose guard Casey Greenhagan as QB Casey Dick kept the ball and burst up the middle for a 23-yard score to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive … His chop block of linebacker Jason Williams cleared the way for Dick's game-winning 4-yard touchdown run that gave Arkansas a 28-24 lead with 1:49 left in the game … Head to Head Competition-NG#60-Chad Greenhagen (6:02-277)-No tackles … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded five knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 96 percent … Helped the team gain 76 yards with two touchdowns on 21 carries (3.62 ypc) and generate 394 total yards on 62 snaps (6.35 yards per play).

Louisiana-Monroe … The Hogs held on for a 28-27 victory, as Luigs delivered six knockdowns, but also gave up a sack … Nose guard Aaron Williams went right up the middle to drop QB Casey Dick for a 1-yard loss on a late second-quarter sack … With 1:22 left in the game, he undercut Williams to give Dick time to lob a game-winning 8-yard scoring strike to D.J. Williams … Asked in the postgame press conference about the team's close win, Luigs noted, "We have some things to work on. It was frustrating not being able to capitalize on our first few drives." … Head to Head Competition-NG#99-Aaron Williams (6:00-296)-Four tackles (1 solos), a 1-yard sack … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded six knockdowns and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 79 percent … Helped the team gain 183 yards with two touchdowns on 36 carries (5.08 ypc) and generate 506 total yards on 70 snaps (7.23 yards per play).

Alabama … Turnovers proved costly in a 49-14 loss, but Luigs collected eight knockdowns as the team gained 217 aerial yards … He also brought the crowd to its feet when he collided with 365-pound nose guard Terrence Cody, as the impact gave QB Casey Dick a chance to flip a 12-yard scoring pass to Andrew Davie … Talking about the rash of turnovers in the postgame press conference, Luigs stated, "We kept giving them gifts. When you play a football team as good as they are, you can't turn the ball over. It was just a lack of execution on our part." … Head to Head Competition-NG#62-Terrence Cody (6:05-365)-Two tackles (1 solo) … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded eight knockdowns and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 86 percent … Helped the team gain 92 yards with no touchdowns on 31 carries (2.97 ypc) and generate 309 total yards on 77 snaps (4.01 yards per play).

Auburn … It was another close win for the Razorbacks, who pulled out a 25-22 decision, thanks to Luigs grading 91 percent behind his two touchdown-resulting blocks … In the third stanza, a trick play on a third-and-goal snap saw the center knock down defensive tackle Mike Blanc as Joe Adams took a handoff and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass back to QB Casey Dick in the right flat … Later in the fourth quarter, he cleared a rush lane between center and left guard that was used by tailback Michael Smith for a 63-yard scoring burst to end an 80-yard, four-play drive … After the game, the media asked Luigs about the team's confidence heading into the rest of the season and responded, "It's great to get a win, especially when you go on the road and you're playing a team like Auburn, they're a good team. We were able to come together [as a team], especially the past two weeks. Emotionally, we went from feeling down to a big high after this game. We'll see how that high helps us." … Head to Head Competition-NG#93-Mike Blanc (6:04-290)-Two tackles (1 solo) … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded five knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 91 percent … Helped the team gain 188 yards with two touchdowns on 44 carries (4.27 ypc) and generate 416 total yards on 77 snaps (5.40 yards per play).

Kentucky … Luigs followed with an 88 percent grade and seven knockdowns to stake the offense to 236 yards on the ground, despite the team playing most of the game without starting tailback Michael Smith … Before Smith was injured, he scored the team's only rushing touchdown by following his center on a 2-yard run midway through the first quarter, but the team again was plagued by turnovers in a 21-20 loss … Asked about the frustrating loss in the postgame press conference, the center said, "I guess we just weren't making the blocks when Kentucky was getting the carries. I think we did a good job up front, in the first three quarters, but that's why we play four quarters. We weren't able to get it done tonight. Saying we gave the game away is an understatement. We had them (Kentucky) right where we wanted them, had them where they were about to quit. Somehow they found their way back in the game. It's a tough one to swallow. We just made tons of mistakes, with penalty after penalty we just shot ourselves in the foot tonight. We can't do that on the road, especially in the SEC. I don't have the words to say how disappointed we are as a team." … Head to Head Competition-NG#98-Myron Pryor (6:01-310)-Two tackles (1 solo), one stop for a 1-yard loss … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded seven knockdowns, two down field blocks and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 88 percent … Helped the team gain 236 yards with one touchdown on 51 carries (4.63 ypc) and generate 330 total yards on 80 snaps (4.13 yards per play).

Tulsa … The Arkansas center made eight knockdowns and two touchdown-resulting blocks to help the Hogs amass 435 yards … Late in the first quarter, he led the sweep around the right side, with Michael Smith following for a 7-yard score that concluded a 65-yard, 7-play series … Head to Head Competition-NG#99-Terrel Nemons (6:04-322)-Seven tackles (1 solo) … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded eight knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 89 percent … Helped the team gain 50 yards with one touchdown on 31 carries (1.61 ypc) and generate 435 total yards on 69 snaps (6.30 yards per play).

South Carolina … Another frustrating loss was of no fault of Luigs, who graded 90 percent, the third time in 2008 that he reached that blocking consistency mark … He cleared a rush lane used by Brandon Barnett for a 23-yard scamper and then ended that 80-yard, 13-play series in the fourth quarter by taking down defensive end Clifton Geathers on a 1-yard scoring run by Barnett … In the postgame press conference, Luigs stated, "It was a physical game. We knew that coming it. They had a good plan and so did we. They executed and we didn't. It was a hard fought ball game and we came out on the short end. We're a better ball club than we showed tonight. It's tough. You really don't know what went wrong. We weren't ready to play and they were. It's hard to overcome that." … Asked if he felt the team could make a bowl appearance with just two games left on their schedule, he noted, "These two games are crucial, especially for our seniors to go out on a high note and really extend our season. I don't think we are ready to be done playing football in two weeks. Hopefully there is going to be a pep in our step when we go to the practice field and really just try and get this first one and then go from there. We've got our hands full. It's going to be tough traveling down there. I mean, they've got a good football team, and going in that type of environment is going to be tough." … Head to Head Competition-NG#95-Nathan Pepper (6:01-287)-No tackles … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded five knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 90 percent … Helped the team gain 54 yards with one touchdown on 31 carries (1.74 ypc) and generate 309 total yards on 65 snaps (4.75 yards per play).

Louisiana State … The Hogs closed out the season with a 31-30 upset victory over the Tigers, as Luigs delivered six knockdowns … On the team's first possession, he pulled out to the left side, clearing a path used by Dennis Johnson for 17-yard touchdown run … Asked about the team's win, Luigs noted, "I remember the Miracle on Markham in 2002. I think I was a junior or senior in high school and I was at that game. This game was very similar to that one. It was two players making a play (London Crawford and Casey Dick) in the corner of the end zone and it was just an amazing finish. We never doubted ourselves coming into this game but we knew LSU was tough. We work on the two minute drill all the time in practice so we felt comfortable on that last drive." … Head to Head Competition-NG#90-Ricky Jean-Francois (6:03-289)-One solo tackle, a 9-yard sack … Offensive Impact-Luigs recorded six knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 84 percent … Helped the team gain 118 yards with one touchdown on 31 carries (3.81 ypc) and generate 398 total yards on 71 snaps (5.61 yards per play).

      2007 Season

Earned All-American first-team honors from The NFL Draft Report, CBS Sports, Football Writers Association of America, Rivals.com, The Sporting News, Phil Steele's College Football magazine, College Football News and the Walter Camp Foundation … Recipient of the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's top center … All-Southeastern Conference first-team pick and shared the league's Jacobs Blocking Trophy with Alabama's Andre Smith … Produced a career-high 84 knockdowns, as he came up with eight down field blocks and fifteen touchdown-resulting blocks, posting an 85.69 percent grade for blocking consistency … Allowed 1.5 quarterback sacks and no pressures on 313 pass plays … Was literally the centerpiece for an offensive line that ranked tied for fifth in the nation, allowing only 13 sacks (1.00 spg) for the campaign … The front wall helped the Razorbacks rank fourth in the nation in rushing (286.54 ypg), 17th in total offense (450.00 ypg) and 13th in scoring (37.31 ppg).

      2007 Game Analysis
