04/27/2009 - QUOTE TO NOTE: "He could have been right up there at the top with some of those other tackles that got taken early. He really has great feet for a tackle but he's raw. With our situation he doesn't have to come in [and play] right away. He can learn from the guys we have." -- Giants' Director of Scouting Marc Ross on OT William Beatty, the second of two second-round draft picks.
04/27/2009 - A closer look at the Giants' picks: Round 2/60 -- William Beatty, LT, 6-5, 310, Connecticut...Beatty appears headed for competition with reserves Adam Koets and Guy Whimper as the backup to the two starters, but Reese and college scouting boss Marc Ross feel he has true left tackle capabilities. For the moment, however, he might be targeted as the emergency replacement for right tackle Kareem McKenzie, who is subject to back spasms.
The Huskies' anchor at the demanding left tackle position for the past two years, Beatty started four games at the position during his freshman campaign and took over those duties for the first five games in 2006 before a lower right leg fracture vs. South Florida sidelined him for the rest of the season.
His injury in 2006 underlined his importance to the offense. The Huskies averaged 205.8 yards rushing and 355.8 yards in total offense per game with the sophomore manning the left tackle position that year. With Beatty out of action, the team managed to average only 166.57 yards rushing and 301.14 yards in total offense.
At William Penn High School, Beatty earned first-team All-County gridiron honors on both offense and defense. The team captain competed as a defensive end, defensive tackle, offensive tackle and tight end during his career. He earned seven varsity letters, participating in football, basketball and track. The center on the school's basketball team, he was an Honor Roll student and member of the Future Leaders of America.
Beatty enrolled at Connecticut as a 265-pound offensive tackle in 2004, spending that season performing on the scout team. He appeared in eight of the team's 11 games in 2005, starting the Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, South Florida and Louisville contests at left tackle. He collected 27 knockdown blocks and also recorded a solo tackle, taking down a defensive back after a Connecticut interception vs. Pittsburgh.
In 2006, Beatty opened the season with a flourish, registering 38 knockdowns and four touchdown-resulting blocks in the team's first five games. He also made a tackle after an interception in the Indiana game. However, his sophomore campaign came to an end when he suffered a lower right leg bone fracture vs. South Florida, undergoing surgery four days later that forced him to sit out the rest of the schedule.
As a junior, Beatty returned to the lineup at left tackle. He struggled vs. the pass rush, along with his fellow line mates, as the Huskies ranked 77th in the nation in quarterback sacks allowed (30, with Beatty accounting for 5.5). He produced 10 touchdown-resulting blocks while delivering 85 knockdowns.
Beatty's final campaign saw him emerge as one of the elite blockers in the East. The first-team All-Big East Conference choice and recipient of the team's Joseph M. Giannelli Unsung Hero Award, the Huskies left tackle helped the team lead the league and rank 13th in the nation in rushing, averaging 216.38 yards per game, with tailback Donald Brown capturing the major college rushing title. He was credited with 88 knockdowns and 13 touchdown-resulting blocks while allowing just two assisted sacks on 329 pass plays.
Scouting Report
GENERAL REPORT
GRADE: 6.30
Body Structure: Beatty has a linear frame with good upper body length in his arms and good width in his chest, but needs to add at least another 20 pounds of bulk. He has adequate thigh and calf thickness, but shows a good bubble. His body does not look like he pushes it much in the weight room, with just adequate muscle development.
Athletic Ability: Needs to add bulk to get back to the weight at which he played during the season (went from 310 to 291), but he has an even-proportioned frame with large, soft hands, a very good wing span (34 1/8-inch arm length), adequate upper-body muscle definition, big bubble and developing thighs and calves (still looks more like a basketball center, but has the frame to carry more weight). While it did improve his mobility, more than a few scouts were concerned when Beatty showed up at close to 20 pounds under his playing weight at the Senior Bowl (291) and he will need to bulk up to play tackle at the NFL level. He has just marginal lower-body strength to drive his man off and create movement, but does show good explosion in his hips (just needs more power). GRADE: 7.0
Football Sense: Beatty had three pedestrian seasons before maturing as a senior, but that led to questions about whether he is a one-year wonder or a player about to emerge. He does a decent job of locating twists and games, but with his penchant for penalties, you wonder if it is a mental lapse or just concentration issues. He gives a good effort on every down, but shows just an adequate understanding for schemes. GRADE: 5.9
Character: Good character and attitude, showing much better maturity on the field as a senior, cutting down on costly penalties. Has no known present off-field issues, but has been distracted by off-field distractions in the past. He is liked by his teammates and respected by the staff. He is not a "rah-rah" type, but does perform with quiet confidence. GRADE: 6.5
Competitiveness: Beatty must learn to play with a nasty temperament, but will give good effort until the whistle (just needs to finish with his hands better). Not aggressive, but plays hard and won't go in the tank if he loses a heated battle. Winning is important to him, but he could finish with more nastiness. GRADE: 6.4
Work Habits: Beatty did not show a great work ethic in the offseason training program until his senior year. With his marginal strength, he needs to be monitored in the training room, as his body indicates he is not a "gym rat" by any means. GRADE: 5.7
ATHLETIC REPORT
GRADE: 6.63
Initial Quickness: Beatty shows good initial quickness to engage and reach his pass set. Plays on his feet with good balance, but needs to show better lower-body flexibility when redirecting. He has good mobility to stay with his man, but could finish better and show more aggression. Gets into his blocks quickly, thanks to above-average knee bend and natural foot quickness. Can be sudden out of his stance and quickly fits into his blocks. Even when he is late off the snap, he shows good adjustment skills on the move (very good leading on outside sweeps). He has good initial quickness to slide, drop back and anchor in one-on-one confrontations with edge rushers. GRADE: 7.5
Lateral Movement: Able to slide and cut off speedy edge rushers (showed marked improvement here as a senior, as he struggled to readjust in the past). He has the lateral slide and mirror ability in pass protection, but does lack good hand placement. He runs with a normal stride and steadily builds his acceleration. He has good hip flexibility and can be sudden, but lacks a surge due to marginal leg strength. GRADE: 7.4
Balance/Stays On Feet: Will over-extend and lose balance, but he improved in 2008, displaying better foot quickness and agility. He is more of a position and wall-off type, thanks to his long reach, flashing good effort and desire attacking the defender (just needs to finish more). He will position and wall off with good desire and makes every effort to control speedy edge rushers with his long reach. When he gets in front of his man, he uses his body effectively to stop the oncoming charge, but must improve his overall strength to prevent being pushed back vs. the bull rushers. GRADE: 7.0
Explosion/Pop: More of a finesse type and needs to improve his leg strength and anchor, as he will generally get walked back into the pocket vs. a strong bull rusher. He does not have the lower-body power to create movement coming off the snap. He also needs to do a better job of protecting his legs and side-stepping the pile, as he will get his base too narrow playing in trash. When he hunkers down, he can deliver explosion, but he is just not consistent, as he lacks the strength, despite having the flexible hips to follow through and finish.
GRADE: 6.1
Run Blocking: Shows a good thrust to get into space and is a decent position blocker. Uses his hands properly and can turn and drive off a defender on running plays. He is able to gain position quickly off the snap and use his body to wall when leading on outside runs. Due to a lack of bulk and ideal strength, he isn't used much blocking in-line, but is comfortable making adjustments in space. He uses his body well to turn and drive out a defender, but would be much better if he had the strong hand punch and placement to control. GRADE: 7.0
Pass Blocking: Beatty doesn't appear to have the natural strength to protect the quarterback's blind side (didn't come into play at Connecticut, as they utilized a left-handed passer). He can reach block when he stays low in his pads (struggles to adjust on the move when he gets too tall in his stance). Shows decent lower-body flexibility and proper knee bend to strike on the move and has the long arms to punch and separate (needs to improve his power and lacks grip strength). Able to match step-for-step with the athletic moves of a defensive end due to good knee bend (will waist bend when he gets high in his stance). GRADE: 6.4
Pulling/Trapping: Better making blocks for the outside running game, thanks to his quickness and loose hips, as he lacks the power to root out defenders working in-line. He is able to gain initial position on second level defenders, but would be even more effective if he can grasp the concept for angling. He has the loose hips to do a good job of taking side blocks to shock and jolt a defender. Because of his hip snap, he could be a quality trap blocker, as he gets out front in an instant on pulls and his acceleration does not tail off running long distances. GRADE: 7.3
Adjust on Linebacker Downfield: Good mobility but has problems working into the second level due to a poor concept for taking angles. Beatty is able to reach the second level, but must show a better concept for angles. GRADE: 5.9
Use of Hands/Punch: Has large hands to lock on and control, but needs to learn how to grab better and must develop a stronger punch to shock and jolt. His hands will also get outside his framework, which lets defenders get attacking his chest to put him up on his heels. Once he gets his hands properly positioned on a defender, he does a good job of leveraging and sustaining his blocks vs. the smaller opponent, but without much strength authority, he is not capable of handling a strong bull rush (lacks visible hand grip and strength to control). GRADE: 5.4
Reactions/Awareness: Beatty was prone to penalties until his senior year. He was grabby, but also has some problems anticipating the snap cadence, leading to several false starts. Alert and made steady strides in 2008 adjusting to the action in front of him. He does a nice job of working in unison with his guards and might be a better fit at right tackle (more effective combo blocking than mauling an opponent). He has the long arms to engulf and the low pads to maintain balance mirroring rushers throughout the play. GRADE: 6.3
Compares To: DEMETRIUS BELL, Buffalo -- Bell saw limited action last season for the Bills and isn't a household name, but Beatty and Bell are quite similar. They are late bloomers with great foot speed, hip snap and developing frame. Beatty, too, might need a year or two in the training room to add bulk and strength, but you can see the natural foot speed and with his long reach, he could be a quality pass protector. However, he might be better at right tackle. Still, he should be drafted earlier than his grade indicates if a team has become enamored with his solid performance during the week of Senior Bowl practices.
OVERALL GRADE: 6.58
