04/28/2009 - QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've got my own agenda. First and foremost it's to take the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Super Bowl. Secondly, I'm going to be the greatest offensive tackle to ever play this game. Every team that passed on me is going to regret it for the rest of the history of that franchise." - Jaguars second-round pick offensive tackle Eben Britton on his goals entering the NFL.

04/28/2009 - COULD SURPRISE: Eben Britton. With much of the focus on Monroe, Britton becomes the overlooked player in the draft in that he plays the same position, though he has the versatility to play either tackle spot or inside at one of the guard positions. What makes Britton so valuable is that many had forecast him to be a first-round selection. That snub to the second round already has grated at Britton, who vows to make every team that he faces pay for their oversight. Those are only fighting words, but it could be enough to propel him into the starting lineup, where he could have a lengthy NFL career.

      Overview

Eben Britton has played both offensive tackle positions and brings an exciting combination of speed, wingspan, strength and field intelligence. Pro scouts are likening his ability to the Cleveland Browns' Joe Thomas.

Britton's stellar pass-protection skills saw the team's new spread offense begin to jell during the 2007 season. He teamed with tight end Rob Gronkowski to give the Wildcats a devastating blocking tandem. With Willie Tuitama back under center, the Wildcats coaching staff felt that moving their most talented blocker to left tackle was not only a natural, but assured that their quarterback's blind side wasn't a concern.

A highly intelligent athlete, Britton was a Scholar-Athlete Award winner and four-time Honor Roll student at John Burroughs High School. Arizona's Creative Writing major also garnered academic recognition while playing for the Wildcats. He comes from a family blessed with athletes, writers, painters and actors. His mother, Abbie, is a journalist and owner of a personal training business.

At John Burroughs High School, Britton was named Foothill League co-Lineman of the Year in 2004. He added Los Angeles Times All-Region San Fernando Valley honors and received votes in the Long Beach Press-Telegram's Best in the West poll. The Super Prep All-American and Prep Star All-West product received a four-star rating and was listed among the nation's elite offensive tackles by Max Emfinger's recruiting service.

Britton also attained All-State second-team accolades from Cal-Hi Sports during his senior season. He competed in the Cali-Florida All-Star game in Miami, a game that features the nation's top prep stars. He started at left tackle as a senior and on the right side during his first two years on the varsity. He also lettered in basketball and track, setting school records in the shot put and discus during his two seasons with the track squad.

During his freshman season at Arizona, Britton became the first Wildcat and the Pac-10 Conference's first freshman to ever keep his assignment off of the stat sheet in three games, earning Freshman All-American honors in 2006. He made 83 knockdowns with 11 touchdown-resulting blocks, as his blocking consistency grade of 84.5 percent was the second-highest in the conference, topped only by Southern California's center, Ryan Kalil (87.38 percent grade).

In 2007, Britton established himself as one of the nation's premier pass protectors, as more than 70 percent of the team's offense generated came from his blocks. He led the nation's right tackles with an 86.58 percent grade for blocking consistency, earning All-American and All-Pac 10 Conference recognition. His 15 touchdown-resulting blocks tied Virginia Tech's Eugene Monroe for most by an active NCAA Division 1-A player.

Britton earned All-American honorable mention and All-Pac 10 Conference first-team accolades in 2008. He adjusted quickly to his new left tackle position, coming up with a league-high 111 knockdowns while producing 17 touchdown-resulting blocks, also the best total of any offensive lineman in the Pac-10. He graded 85.69 percent for overall blocking consistency, including five games with marks 90 percent or better.

      Scouting Report

      GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 7.46

Body Structure: Has a huge frame with minimal body fat. He is a well-proportioned athlete with a big chest (almost 52 inches), broad shoulders, muscular and long arms (19 inches), adequate hand size, thick thighs (32 inches) and calves. His tall frame makes him look almost too lean, but he has good bone structure and room to carry at least another 20 pounds without the added bulk affecting his overall quickness.

Athletic Ability: Good quickness and footwork in his kick-slide. He shows the agility and balance to make plays into the second level and shows good lower-body flexibility in attempts to change direction. He has decent open-field acceleration, moving well and adjusting easily while taking angles to neutralize the linebackers. He is an above-average knee bender who can recover on the rare occasions that he waist bends. He has the functional movement ability to mirror edge rushers. He plays on his feet with good balance and body control, doing a nice job of adjusting and picking up defenders in space. He is also a solid leverage player who can slide and sustain. GRADE: 7.2

Football Sense: Britton plays with great awareness, knowing how to use his size to engulf and his quickness to get in front and lead on sweeps. He needs minimal reps to retain and has a firm grasp of the playbook. He is the unquestioned leader of the offensive line and knows all of his other line mates' assignments. He is quick to pick up the game plan and it is rare to see him make a mental error. GRADE: 7.4

Character: Quality person who gets very good family support. Articulate and modest. He is an unselfish type who will not hesitate to help other teammates digest the playbook. He is probably the most respected player on the team and one the coaches usually use as a leader for recruits to follow. GRADE: 7.5

Competitiveness: Off the field, Britton is a very nice guy, but on the field, he is a legitimate tough guy who plays with a mean streak. He is very physical using his hands and consistently works to finish his blocks. He is the type that will not hesitate to intimidate an opponent, as he displayed when he attacked California's Zack Follett after the linebacker tried "mouth off" to Britton during their 2008 meeting. He wants to finish every play and shows good initiative looking for secondary targets to hit after he neutralizes his man. GRADE: 7.8

Work Habits: Great leader-by-example type, but will not hesitate to get on a teammate for less that full effort on the field. He stays on top of the action and has the mental toughness to take well to hard coaching. He is a solid program player who will do all the little extras to improve his craft and commands attention from the defense on the field due to his dominating presence. GRADE: 7.4

      ATHLETIC REPORT

      GRADE: 6.21

Initial Quickness: Britton shows good quickness for his size. He's light on his feet, showing the ability to react to movement in front of him. His quickness off the snap helps him gain an advantage when working in-line, but you would like to see him explode off the ball more often when playing on an island, as edge rushers surprise him. He shuffles his feet to gain position, but needs to show better hip rotation off the snap to reach his spot on the outside, as he does not demonstrate the lateral agility to protect the edge well. He is effective when asked to turn upfield and neutralize linebackers on the move. His balance and feet will generally see him gain position when blocking in-line. He just needs to be more adept in sliding out to pick up edge rushers in pass protection. As a left tackle during his junior year, Britton displayed good hand action, but without explosion with his initial step, coming off the ball with good urgency on both run and pass plays is not his forte' and he might be a better fit not being exposed on the outside by playing right tackle. GRADE: 6.5

Lateral Movement: Shows effective ease of movement redirecting inside, but doesn't usually accelerate instantly when stalking out defenders in isolated situations along the edge. He has made steady progress in taking good angles to attack second-level defenders on the move in 2008, but he needs to show the loose hips needed to easily redirect and keep his balance while moving laterally when sliding. GRADE: 6.1

Balance/Stays On Feet: Uses long arms and reach to cover up defenders. He gets low in his pads, which helps him generate good force coming off the snap. Has good knee bend and while he could use more bulk, bigger down linemen are not going to be able to get under his pads and drive him back into the pocket. He flashes the ability to gain position coming out of his stance, but needs more explosive moves when isolated with edge rushers and blitzers. He has good balance and body control working in-line, at the second level and in pass protection, making him a better fit as a right tackle. He shows quick feet, a wide base and the flexibility to adjust and stick working in-line, though. He plays flat-footed and with a wide base, which allows him to sustain well vs. bull rushers. The thing you see on film in 2008 (Idaho, Washington and California games) is his ability to maintain balance when moving and stalking in the second level … GRADE-7.6

Explosion/Pop: Britton combines good size and strength, along with decent quickness to generate good pop taking on defenders straight-ahead or in-line. He is very good at getting under the defenders' pads and dominating (see 2008 Washington, Idaho, Washington State and Brigham Young contests). He has a strong hand jolt to shock and opponent working down the line and does a good job of driving into his man in attempts to wall off. Not just needs to be more explosive coming out of the blocks vs. edge rushers (see 2008 USC and Oregon State games), but he positions himself well and gets his hands up quickly on the rise, generating functional strength to impact, pop and surge with force. He seems to lack sudden hip and leg explosion, but compensates with a strong hand punch to jolt. He plays with good aggression and has the flexibility and power to gain leverage, especially when attempting to create a crease for the ground game. As the 2008 season progressed, Britton continued to show better pop and explosion needed to drive the defender off the line of scrimmage, but due to adequate hip snap, he can be beaten off the edge … GRADE-6.4

Run Blocking: Britton is a solid walk-off drive blocker who might lack an explosive first step, but once he gets into gear, he moves with ease getting into the second level. He plays with natural strength, but will need to improve his power base and increase his bulk to withstand the rigors in the trenches as an NFL player. He has the power to move the pile and drives block with leverage, but could be better here with added bulk. He drives off the snap hard, as he demonstrates the leg drive and feet to stay on his blocks and sustain. He is a good in-line blocker, possessing a wide base as he runs his feet well. He is very good at sustaining and is developing a nice feel for blocking angles (still learning technique, but is responding quickly). He is effective when asked to wall off and screen vs. down line-men, but will struggle to pick up the quick blitz. He brings power to his game when driving for movement and will generally finish, but can be walked back into the pocket when he overextends with his hands and lets the defender get into his chest. He has the good foot-work to stay on his feet on the move and can handle the switch-off well when working in combination with his guard (see 2008 Idaho, Oregon and Washington State games), making him a better fit on the right side than on the left … GRADE-7.3

Pass Blocking: Still learning blocking schemes, but demonstrates enough foot quickness to slide, good knee bend, patience and a strong hand punch. Britton stays square and balanced when shuffling and sliding. Even when he gets overextended, he is quick to recover because of his athletic ability. He could use more bulk to anchor, has the speed to make a run on the edge rushers. Separates himself from others in his drop-step and kick-slide to gain depth and width needed to anchor. Has the balance and body control needed to make reach blocks. Must improve use of change-of-direction agility to wall off and generate the foot quickness to recover when beaten by edge rushers. He does have outstanding quickness off the snap to gain advantage, but has good balance and control in his kick-slide. Makes cut-off blocks, readjusting quickly to the edge rush. His balance in his pass set lets him mirror and contain bull rushers, but he needs to keep his hands inside the framework to prevent edge rushers from slipping off his blocks. GRADE: 7.6

Pulling/Trapping: Can pull and trap, reaching and logging when working in-line. He has the functional speed to cut off the linebackers when leading through the inside holes and shows good foot adjustment to make solid contact in the open. He is athletic and smooth when moving off the line and has the body control to execute blocks in space. He has good athleticism to stay up and play the game on his feet. He is capable of coming off the snap smoothly to pull, but it does take him a few steps to get into gear. He has good open-field acceleration for a down lineman, doing a nice job of initiating contact and following through with his hand placement and leg drive to sustain, but will get lazy and lumber when having to go long distances. GRADE: 6.8

Adjust on Linebacker Downfield: Can engulf and pancake linebackers on the move (34 downfield blocks in 37 games). With his hand punch and height, he shows the agility to smother his primary target and move on to the next man. He has good balance working in space, as he can slide smoothly (just lacks explosion) to make the cut off. He is strong enough to stay up in his stance, maintaining proper pad level to keep his feet and adjust on the move. His ability to consistently take good blocking angles to neutralize and cut off the linebackers stands out on film. His athletic ability is shown when he makes adjustments to pick up secondary defenders downfield. GRADE: 6.1

Use of Hands/Punch: Strikes with a strong punch in attempts to jolt. When he follows through with his hand delivery, he can finish with force. Shows the ability to grab and control, stunning his opponent with his punch. He has done a good job of improving his hand usage, showing power and determination to lock on and steer on runs. He gets good hand positioning and shows explosion with his punch to jolt and gain control, but sometimes will drop his hands and fails to reload. He keeps his base wide in order to position and adjust to the outside edge quickness and strikes with authority in pass protection. He is still learning the "little tricks" like getting underneath to grab and ride the defender out, but continues to make steady progress. GRADE: 7.3

Reactions/Awareness: Britton has the ability to shuffle and slide his feet, but due to a lack of explosiveness, he is a better fit on the right side. He is quick to recover when caught out of position and has the foot balance to short pull in the open, but must generate a quicker burst out of his stance to pick up the edge blitz or defensive line stunts. With his adequate lateral movement, he does not readily change direction when moving outside or out coming off the snap. He does keep his head on a swivel, showing good reactions and awareness on both running and passing plays. He has no problems handling movement in front of him or when working in-line, as his kick-slide allows him to adjust and stay in front of his man. Will have some issues when moving laterally. He has good speed and plays flat-footed, but must show better explosion and flexibility when changing direction. In pass protection, he has good reactionary ability to the bull rush, but would be even better if he can develop the loose hips and ability to move in attempts to impact on the defender. Will have problems handling movement at the next level. GRADE: 6.9

Compares To: ERIC WINSTON, Houston -- Like Winston, Britton has very good hand placement and usage, but despite good timed speed, he needs to show better hip snap to mirror vs. quicker edge rushers. He stays low in his pads and has the functional foot speed and above-average angle concept to neutralize second-level defenders, but will labor at times running long distances or getting out to neutralize the wide pass rush. While he has shown the ability to play left tackle during his junior year, he could be re-converted to the right side at the pro level, where he can get on the field quicker and be surrounded by veteran mentors before being moved back to the left side in a year or two after he adds needed bulk to play that position. With his tenacity and good strength, he should contribute as a starter by his second professional season.

      OVERALL GRADE: 6.96

      2008 Game Analysis

Idaho … Britton opened the season in flawless fashion, as he delivered seven knockdowns with two touchdown-resulting blocks, as the Wildcats exploded for a 70-0 triumph … Tail-back Nicolas Grigsby used a block by his left tackle to cap an 11-play, 80-yard game opening series with a 1-yard touchdown run … Britton created a huge rush lane and Grisgsby burst through the hole en route to a 55-yard gain to the Idaho 3. From there, Britton drove Rust and linebacker JoJo Dickson out of the path used by frosh tailback Keola Antolin for a 3-yard touchdown that concluded that 67-yard, 4-play drive with 1:33 left on the clock before halftime … Head to Head Competition-DE#57-Taylor Rust (6:02-239)-Two solo tackles … Offensive Impact-Britton recorded seven knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 92 percent … Helped the team gain 265 yards with five touchdowns on 49 carries (5.41 ypc), complete 23-of-31 passes for 256 yards and four scores, and generate 521 total yards on 80 plays (6.51 yards per play).

Toledo … Facing an aggressive defense, Britton still excelled in the trenches, coming up with one touchdown-resulting block in a 41-16 win, as the team gained 319 of its 452 yards over the left side of the field … Midway through the second quarter, Britton retreated to the right side, flattening Derrick Summers before the pass rusher could get to Tuitama on the QB's 23-yard pass completion to Thomas that was downed at the Toledo 27. On the next snap, Grisgby took a handoff and Britton raced into the second level, taking down middle linebacker Daris Quinn on the tailback's 27-yard touchdown jaunt … Tuitama hid behind Britton long enough to connect with Thomas on a 17-yard pass and did it again, as the left tackle obliterated defensive end Albertson Alexandre on the UA passer's 7-yard scoring toss to split end Delashaun Dean to finish a 68-yard, 8-play late third quarter drive … Head to Head Competition-DE#57-Albertson Alexandre (6:05-233)-Two solo tackles … Offensive Impact-Britton recorded seven knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 86 percent … Helped the team gain 153 yards with three touchdowns on 33 carries (4.64 ypc), complete 26-of-34 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, and generate 452 total yards on 67 plays (6.75 yards per play).

New Mexico … The Wildcats suffered their first loss for the season, falling to the Lobos, 36-28. The ground game proved to be Arizona's downfall, but their aerial attack kept them in the game, as Britton continued his dominance in protecting QB Willie Tuitama's blind side, delivering eight knockdowns … A third-&-1 toss from Tuitama to Mike Thomas was due to Britton leveling Jeremiah Lovato before the defensive end could get to the Arizona passer. On the next snap, the left tackle retreated into the backfield, pushing Lovato out of the way and then staving off a charge by linebacker Ian Clark as Tuitama uncorked a 43-yard touchdown strike to Thomas to complete that 69-yard, 6-play early first quarter series … At the start of the second half, Britton took charge in the trenches. He battled back a pair of defenders while providing the protection Tuitama needed to complete a third-&-11 pass to Delashaun Dean, followed by clearing a rush lane inside for tailback Nicolas Grigsby's 7-yard run to the UNM 4. On the next snap, cleared the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown, as Britton blasted a huge hole for the runner to race through, ending an 11-play, 69-yard drive … Head to Head Competition-DE#94-Jeremiah Lovato (6:02-262)-One assisted tackle … Offensive Impact-Britton recorded eight knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 90 percent … Helped the team gain 321 aerial yards with three touchdowns on 50 attempts (6.42 yards per attempt), complete 27-of-50 passes for 321 yards and three scores, and generate 388 total yards on 74 plays (5.24 yards per play).

UCLA … Arizona broke the game open with two fourth-quarter touchdowns for a 31-10 win over the Bruins, thanks to the return of Britton to the field for the final stanza. The left tackle sat out the third quarter while receiving IVs to help him combat dehydration due to the excessive heat and humidity. During his absence, the Wildcats struggled offensively, gaining just 5 yards on six carries while completing 3-of-9 passes for 18 yards without Britton in the lineup. The left tackle registered nine knockdowns with two touchdown-resulting blocks for the ground game and also picked up the blitz to let QB Willie Tuitama throw a scoring pass in the final frame … Early in the opening quarter, Britton smashed middle linebacker Reggie Carter to the ground on Tuitama's 24-yard flag pass to Terrell Turner that set up an Arizona 41-yard field goal … In the second quarter, he flattened linebacker John Hale as Tuitama uncorked a pass that Mike Thomas converted into a 52-yard gain to the UCLA 5. On third-&-3, Britton worked in-line, clearing a rush lane used by Nicolas Grigsby for a 3-yard touchdown run … On a fourth-&-1 rushing attempt by Grigsby late in the second quarter, several Bruins fell on Britton's right leg, and it appeared that Carter and free safety Rahim Moore were intentionally trying to injure the left tackle, as they were violently pulling on his ankle … Britton did not start the second half, as his right quadriceps muscle cramped up due to dehydration from the hot and humid playing field. He received an IV, but returned to the line-up at the 14:20 mark of the fourth quarter when the offensive line had to shift several players to compensate for the loss of injured center Blake Kerley … .With Britton back on the field, the offense suddenly came back to life, scoring 14 quick points, as Tuitama connected on 7-of-9 tosses for 82 yards and the running game chipped in with 38 yards during those two scoring drives … .On his first play back on the field, Tuitama hid behind Britton to flip a 10-yard hitch pass to Delashaun Dean. That was followed by a third-&-2 toss from the QB to tight end Rob Gronkowski for a 4-yard score, as Britton picked up the blitz, pushing defensive end Korey Bosworth into defensive tackle Brigham Harwell to give Tuitama protection while completing his toss over the middle … Britton was not done, as he made up for "lost time" on the next series. Tuitama rolled right, only to see a slew of oncoming Bruins, and retreated to the left side of the field. Britton alertly collided into Harwell, sending the defender to the ground as the Wildcats passer found Mike Thomas with a 43-yard pass that was downed at the UCLA 15. Reserve tailback Xavier Smith took a third-&-3 handoff and raced between the hole Britton created in-line for an easy 8-yard touchdown run that capped an 8-play, 75-yard series … Head to Head Competition-DE#55-Korey Bosworth (6:01-244)-Six tackles (3 solos), one fumble recovery for a 1-yard touchdown return, one stop for a 1-yard loss … Offensive Impact-Despite sitting out the third quarter, Britton recorded nine knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 88 percent … Helped the team gain 111 yards with two touchdowns on 35 carries (3.17 ypc), complete 16-of-29 passes for 2322 yards and two scores, and generate 333 total yards on 64 plays (5.20 yards per play), as the Wildcats were limited to just 23 yards on 15 plays (1.53 yards per play), while Britton sat out the third quarter.

Washington … Last season, tight end Rob Gronkowski and Britton formed a devastating tandem on the right side of the Wildcats' front wall. After their stellar performances vs. the Huskies, both players should think of changing their majors to Legal Studies, as they "laid down the law" and "handed out justice" to a frustrated Washington defense. It was fitting that these close teammates established milestones in this 48-14 victory. Gronkowski matched the school game-record with three touchdown catches, as Britton made timely blocks on all three scoring drives. In addition to his key blocks on the tight end's three scoring grabs, the left tackle also closed out the day with nine knockdowns for an offense that generated 449 yards … .Britton began the day with a pair of drive blocks that saw tailback Nic Grigsby take inside rush lanes on runs of 8 and 6 yards that set up Arizona's first score, a 29-yard field goal on their first possession … Britton chopped down the legs of defensive end Darrion Jones, giving QB Willie Tuitama time to find Gronkowski on a crossing pattern for the tight end's first touchdown catch for the day, a 37-yarder … In the second quarter, Britton opened a crease for Grigsby's 9-yard run and the tailback went over the left side for an 11-yard scamper, setting up Tuitama's 9-yard touchdown strike to Gronkowski with 3:58 left in the first half … At the start of the third quarter, Britton leveled defensive end Everette Thompson on Grigsby's 12-yard jaunt that saw 15 more yards tacked on after a Washington defender grabbed the tailback's face mask. With the ball placed at the Huskies' 15, Tuitama's blind side was well-protected, as Britton held off Thompson and defensive tackle Senio Kelemete while his quarterback again connected with Gronkowski on an 8-yard pass over the middle, as the touchdown finished off a 75-yard, 8-play series … Later in the third frame, reserve QB Matt Scott had Britton's down field block to thank for him breaking free on a bootleg for a 36-yard gain. With the ball at the Washington 2 on third-&-1, Britton looked like Moses parting the Red Sea, as he simply obliterated three defenders, as the tackle and his opponents all crashed to the ground, with tailback Xavier Smith literally running up Britton's back for a 2-yard touchdown run that capped a 6-play, 70-yard drive. From there, Britton teamed with guard Matt Diaz to squeeze the Cal front wall, clearing a path used by Antolin for an 11-yard score … Follett, who was annoying Arizona linemen for his dirty tactics on the field, grabbed Britton's face mask and tried to rip off the tackle's helmet, falling off the lineman to land on Tuitama for an 8-yard sack on the Wildcats' next drive. Follett then got up and starting jawing with Britton, but the left tackle shoved the line-backer to the ground, as Follett went scurrying like a little snake to the sidelines. The referees assessed off-setting penalties (Follett for a personal foul on the face mask grab and Britton for unsportsmanlike conduct) on the play, as Arizona would then be forced to punt. Later in the game, Follett was again caught ripping the helmet off Arizona offensive lineman Colin Baxter, but the refs stepped in before a brawl could escalate. The rest of the day, Follett would have a "bulls eye" on his chest, as the left tackle refused to let his opponent initiate any more "less than ethical" performance on the field … Midway through the third quarter, Britton hit Follett with such force, that the linebacker fell into his own teammate, defensive end Tyson Alvalu, letting Antolin cut back against the grain and break free around the right corner for a 59-yard scamper to the Cal 3. Two plays later, Britton led the offensive linemen in unision, shoving the Bears into the end zone, as Antolin scored his third touch-down for the game on a 1-yard run to conclude a 77-yard, 7-play drive … Antolin would follow Britton on a 9-yard run, as Follett was again flattened by the left tackle on the play. He then latched on to Follett and defensive end Cameron Jordan to protect Tuitama's blind side on the QB's 35-yard touchdown toss to Rob Gronkowski that completed a 6-play, 59-yard late third quarter possession … Head to Head Competition-DE#44-Tyson Alualu (6:03-290)-Two tackles (1 solo), 0.5 sack for a 2-yard loss (Note-OLB#56-Zack Follett registered an 8-yard sack over left tackle) … Offensive Impact- Britton recorded nine knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting block, coming up with key pass blocks on two other scoring drives, but allowed 1.5 sacks and was penalized once, grading 81 percent … Helped the team gain 179 yards with three touchdowns on 41 carries (4.37 ypc), complete 16-of-27 passes for 225 yards and two scores and generate 404 total yards on 68 plays (5.94 yards per play).

Britton faced a slew of USC defenders, as Southern California was constantly stunting up front, but the left tackle more than held his own, making one touchdown-resulting block along with eight key blocks/knockdowns … Early in the first quarter, Britton flipped rush end Clay Matthews to the ground, giving QB Willie Tuitama time to hit Delashaun Dean with a third-&-7 pass for 12 yards. Tailback Keola Antolin used a hole created by his left tackle, as Britton again attacked Matthews, giving Antolin breathing room to cut back inside for a first down on an 11-yard run near mid field … Defensive end Everson Griffen was sent flying when Britton ran over the defender on Antolin's 7-yard scoot to the UA 37 later in the opening frame. He then held off defensive end Kyle Moore on Tuitama's 10-yard pass to Mike Thomas, as USC incurred a penalty to put the ball at the Trojans 12-yard line. That drive would continue into the second quarter, but stalled, as the Wildcats settled for a 30-yard field goal … Britton crashed into middle linebacker Rey Maualuga on a 6-yard run by Antolin, as the left tackle then cleared a rush lane for Antolin's 8-yard scamper. On third-&-2, he stymied defensive end Kyle Moore, opening a path for tailback Nic Grigsby on a third-&-2 run for 3 yards. Tuitama then hid behind Britton, who clobbered Matthews on the play, giving his QB a chance to flip a 12-yard bubble screen to Terrell Turner at the USC 33 … Grigsby broke through left tackle on third-&-4 for a 4-yard gain and a first down. On first-&-goal, Britton redirected in-line, as he and the Wildcats left guard led the charge on Grigsby's 5-yard touchdown run up the middle that gave Arizona a 10-10 tie early in the second half … In the fourth quarter, the left tackle flattened Kyle Moore to spring Grigsby for a 26-yard jaunt to mid field, but that drive stalled, as the left tackle saw Clay Matthews bounce off Britton to sack Tuitama for an 8-yard loss … Head to Head Competition-DE#84-Kyle Moore (6:06-270)-Two tackles (1 solo), 0.5 stop for a 1-yard loss … DE#47-Clay Matthews (6:03-240)-Five tackles (4 solos), 1.5 sacks for minus 13 yards … Offensive Impact- Britton recorded eight knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 75 percent … Helped the team gain 100 yards with one touch-down on 30 carries (3.33 ypc), complete 14-of-31 passes for 88 yards and two generate 188 total yards on 61 plays (3.08 yards per play).

By the time the game ended, the Wildcats had scored seven times on the ground … QB Willie Tuitama took off on a 9-yard option around left tackle and tailback Keola Antolin used a second-&-2 block by Britton to gain 5 yards before following his left tackle on a 10-yard scamper. Receiver Mike Thomas concluded that 72-yard, 7-play series by using a block by Britton on defensive end Matt Mullennix to score on a 5-yard reverse early in the first quarter … Later in the opening stanza, Mullennix was pushed into free safety Xavier Hicks by Britton, springing tailback Nic Grigsby for a 24-yard jaunt to midfield, where on the next play, he took down Mullennix to give Tuitama time to flip a 43-yard seam pass to tight end Rob Gronkowski for a touchdown … Early in the second quarter, Britton teamed with left guard Matt Diaz to push the WSU defensive line inside, allowing Antolin to reverse field for a 5-yard touchdown run … On the next possession, a frustrated Mullennix was charged with a personal foul, as he tried to hit Britton in the legs after the play was ruled dead … It would be a long day for that defender, as Britton simply flattened Mullennix and then drove nose guard Toby Turpin into the defensive end, opening a rush lane that Tuitama used for aq 4-yard scoring scamper with 2:47 left in the first half … The Wildcats were not finished with their second quarter dominance, as Britton stepped over Mullennix while leading the sweep on Grigsby's 20-yard run to the WSU 9, as the left tackle and left guard again worked in unison to clear a rush lane used by Grigsby for a 6-yard touchdown … Mullennix again was flattened by Britton on Tuitama's pinpoint pass to Delashaun Dean for a 21-yard gain and Smith later went over left tackle for an 11-yard burst, setting up an Arizona 40-yard field goal … Turpin was driven into the ground by Britton, freeing Tuitama to fire a 13-yard screen pass to Rob Gronkowski that set up Smith's 4-yard scoring scamper early in the fourth quarter … Reserve QB Matt Scott followed Britton into the middle of the line, where the left tackle clobbered middle line-backer Greg Trent as the quarterback reversed field on a bootleg and turned towards the right sidelines en route to an 18-yard touchdown run that gave the Wildcats a 59-28 win … Head to Head Competition-DE#58-Matt Mullennix (6:06-253)-Five tackles (3 solos), one stop for a 2-yard loss … Offensive Impact- Britton recorded eleven knockdowns, one down field block and two touch-down-resulting blocks, grading 90 percent … Helped the team gain 317 yards with seven touchdowns on 57 carries (5.56 ypc), complete 11-of-15 passes for 215 yards and one score and generate 531 total yards on 72 plays (7.38 yards per play).

Britton registered nine knockdowns, adding a touchdown-resulting block, but was also penalized once for a false start … The left tackle had a few glitches during the first quarter before settling down. He was beaten by defensive end Slade Norris, who tackled tailback Nic Grigsby for a 5-yard loss on a third-&-2 rushing attempt, forcing the Wildcats to punt after their first possession … On their next series, he flattened Norris on a 10-yard pass from QB Willie Tuitama to Mike Thomas, but two plays later, on third-&-5, he was called for a false start … Early in the second quarter, Britton crushed defensive end Kevin Frahm as tailback Keola Antolin took a pitch-out around left end for a 13-yard gain. Arizona State … In a meeting of interstate rivals, there were also several personal battles that took place on the field between the Sun Devils and Wildcats. It was only fitting that the league's best offensive lineman and one of the country's premier pass rushers would collide on this Saturday evening. Like two gunfighters ready to duel it out in Tombstone, Britton and ASU defensive end Dexter Davis met at midfield and shook hands prior to the start of Arizona's 31-10 victory. The "Gunfight at OK Corral" would soon begin in the trenches, as Davis would post his eleventh sack for the season, but Britton would knock his opponent down eight times while making a touchdown-resulting block and coming up with timely blocks on three other scoring drives … Arizona's success over the left side of the line was evident, as they would increase their offensive success by scoring on 50-of-53 drives that ended up in the red zone in 2008 (41 touchdowns, 9 field goals) … Late in the first quarter, "Round One" of the Britton-Davis battle went to the Wildcat lineman, as Britton drove Davis off the line to clear a huge hole inside that tailback Nic Grigsby used to redirect en route to a 30-yard run, Arizona's longest rushing attempt for the contest. Britton drove into Davis with a jolting hand punch, as Grigsby bounced wide left to pick up another 10 yards on the ground. QB Willie Tuitama then found the tailback with an 11-yard screen pass, as Britton engulfed Davis and rode the defender away from the UA passer. Tuitama then executed a 23-yard to Terrell Turner, with their left tackle pushing two defenders inside, causing one ASU player to get flagged for a personal foul due to his frustration of not getting around Britton. "Round Two" went to Davis on the next play, as the Sun Devil used a speed rush off the left shoulder of Britton to sack Tuitama for a 10-yard sack, only the third time Britton allowed his quarterback to be dropped on 377 pass plays in 2008. As if they were the only two opponents on the field, Britton dug in and on the next play, flattened Davis as Tuitama rolled out behind his left tackle's block to fire a 22-yarder to tight end Rob Gronkowski. Britton was not done in exacting revenge for allowing that sack, as on the next play, he locked on to Davis and simply spun him around, giving Tuitama a chance to again connect with Gronkowski for a 17-yard touchdown that ended a 12-play, 98-yard series that took close to six minutes to complete … All was quiet in the trenches between the two lineman for the rest of the day, as Britton would see Davis make just two "jump on" tackles on Arizona's final possession of the game … Later in the third quarter, tailback Nic Grigsby took a handoff, turned left, saw a slew of oncoming defenders, but cut back to the middle with Britton and left guard Matt Diaz holding off Davis, Wooten and linebacker Mike Nixon to see the Arizona runner break free on a 12-yard scoring scamper that gave Arizona a 21-10 lead … Head to Head Competition-DE#58-Dexter Davis (6:03-258)-Four solo tackles, one sack for a 10-yard loss … Offensive Impact-Britton recorded eight knockdowns, one down field block and one touchdown-resulting block, grading 84 percent … Helped the team gain 105 yards with one touchdown on 40 carries (2.63 ypc), complete 25-of-37 passes for 284 yards and two scores and generate 389 total yards on 77 plays (5.05 yards per play).

Brigham Young (Las Vegas Bowl) … Arizona appeared in its first Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl and won its first bowl game overall since 1998 with a 31-21 victory, as Britton and his offensive line mates played an almost flawless game. Matched up against a defense that was much bigger and stronger, the front wall provided stellar pass protection, as the left tackle registered his seventh 90 percent blocking consistency game for the season, producing nine knockdowns to go with a pair of touchdown-resulting blocks … Early in the first quarter, Britton latched on to defensive end Jan Jorgensen, riding the Cougar wide from QB Willie Tuitama, who unleashed a 71-yard bomb to Terrell Turner that was downed at the 1-yard line. From there, Britton obliterated strong-side linebacker David Nixon, allowing tailback Nic Grigsby to cut back to the middle for a 1-yard score that capped an 8-play, 96-yard drive … In the third quarter, H-Back Chris Gronkowski pulled in a 24-yard touchdown pass, as Britton used Jorgensen's body to take out the defender, along with weak-side linebacker Coleby Clawson, allowing Tuitama to complete the scoring strike …

The Wildcats marched 82 yards on seven plays to set up a Tuitama scoring burst. Britton cleared a path used by Grigsby for an 8-yard run up the middle. He then shoved Nixon to the ground on a 23-yard swing pass from Tuitama to Turner. Then, it was like a scene from the Emilio Estevez movie, "Maximum Overdrive." Grigsby took a handoff and followed what looked like a runaway Mack truck, as Britton first flattened Jorgensen at the line of scrimmage, then joined left guard Matt Diaz in simply running over Clawson. Not done with that carnage, the left tackle charged down field, chasing after Nixon as if the line-backer was being attacked by his mom after coming home with a bad report card. Britton caught up with his frightened opponent 27 yards up field, where Grigsby was finally stopped, but not after 10 more yards were tacked on the play, as Nixon was flagged for a personal foul after taking out his frustration over the embarrassment of being chased away by Britton on a crucial play. Three plays later on third-&-goal, Britton leveled Jorgensen and even though he was off-balanced from that block, he righted himself, swung back outside to take down strong-side linebacker Daniel Sorensen, leaving a gaping path over left tackle that Tuitama used to race into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown … Record Watch-Britton added to his Pac-10 records, recording his seventh game of registering at least a 90 percent grade for blocking consistency in 2008 … He also added to his national lead, as his two touchdown-resulting blocks gave him 24 for the year, which also topped the previous major college record of 23 touchdown-resulting blocks by Joe Thomas of Wisconsin in 2006 … Head to Head Competition-DE#84-Jan Jorgensen (6:03-274)-One solo tackle … Offensive Impact-Britton recorded nine knockdowns, one down field block and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 96 percent … Helped the team gain 91 yards with two touchdowns on 29 carries (3.14 ypc), complete 24-of-35 passes for 325 yards and two scores and generate 416 total yards on 63 plays (6.60 yards per play).
